PM me and i'll give you a sure fire way to get rid of that particular "friend". It works because I've used it over and over. Who said I wanted to get rid of it. I used to keep mice as pets. They're actually nice pets. I believe you nwheaton, I had a pet mouse as a child. And later I kept a white rat as a pet. Her name was Ratemus. Bet you can't guess who's name I pilfered for that. ;D She was a real sweatheart too!

Kodak moment indeed! Gorgeous creatures. How much time do you spend with a brush on them? ;D I can do 3 dogs and 1 cat in 1 episode of WWW. Well, sometimes we run into a second episode as well. It is our Friday night ritual.

The bad thing about pets like that, though, is they don't live too long. You get attached to this tiny creature and then it's gone. My last one died in my hand. I think she had a heart attack because she was gasping for air. She was my sweetheart and her name was Peanut.

It's always hard to lose a a pet no matter what it is. Ratemus found a new home when I moved, with a young lady who adored her. The new place wouldn't let me have a pet rat.

My neighbor in college had a pet rat named Sam. She bought him a leash and we took him outside...he was so excited/terrified sniffing around in the grass. I don't think she took him out too often though. He used to nibble on my long fingernails when I would hold him.

When I was in college I lived in a co-ed dorm alternating girls floors & guys floors. One day I heard, "Eeek, eek it's a mouse!" "No! Eeek, eeek, it's a rat!" So I had to go and see. Sure enough some guy had let loose a young fawn colored rat. Much to everyones amazement (and disgust) I picked him up, put him on my shoulder and took him back to my dorm room. Achilles lived with me for the rest of the year and even flew home to my parents at Christmas.
We always had rats as pets when I was young. They are amazingly intelligent.

The domesticated ones are amazingly intelligent and sweet natured. I grew up on a farm and encountered regular wild ones only a couple of times and they are amazingly vicious and nasty. They can make a loud growling snort/hiss that makes every hair on your body stand up. They won't hesitate to come after you if they feel cornered and they scared the crap outa me!

We had a huge old barn when I was a kid in Pennsylvania, and chicken coops and pig sty; so lots of places for wild rats to live and hide. I watched one battling with one of our cats, and the rat was on the offensive! I also had one run up my leg out by the chicken coop. It still makes me shudder.

Are the domestic ones more intelligent than the wild ones? I had one in my house one time because my neighbor at the time was a daycare and they had a dumpster between our houses. I set traps but it kept getting around them. I'm not going to tell you how I got rid of it. The most destructive thing I ever had in my house, besides my children, was a chipmunk. Talk about intelligent, it took me months to get rid of that little varmint.

I know we could never get the wild one(s) to take bait or be caught in a trap. We had lots of cats on the farm so seeing a rat was rare. I'm sure very few made it to full adulthood.

We had tons of chipmunks appear as soon as our kitty died...I mean within weeks they took up residence! We finally have our little Miss Darla, but we still have the grinnies because she doesn't go outside. Hopefully it means they won't be inside ever, though!

When we bought our house in the woods, they were everywhere and in everything. In the rock gardens, in the woodpiles, they'd run through our gutters and get in the garage and you wouldn't believe how much they like to crawl around in your car's engine when it's parked. There were burrows everywhere. Then came Neo. (drumroll here) He was like the wrath of God on those little critters. The last time I got a good look at one was early last summer. It was racing across the lawn screaming for it's life! Neo was a big ginger torpedo right behind it! They both shot up a tree and then Neo changed his mind and climbed back down. If that chipmunk had any sense, he packed his nuts and got outa town! ;D

I set up my (artificial) Christmas tree this morning. Barely had time to put it together and plug in the lights and Brandy decided she just couldn't wait!

Snow helped me with mine a few days ago. The glass ornaments go at the top, non-breakables at kitty batting height (which is quite high since she can sit on the arm of the sofa). I don't put lights on the big tree because Snow used to climb the tree in her younger days and would chew the cord. Thankfully she has matured a little since then.

Delightful CG!
Ahh....cats and x-mas trees. This is the first year in about ten years we've had a cat in the house for christmas. Hubby put a up tree that was given to us instead of our usual trees and I'm going to use unbreakable ornaments this year. Not sure what Neo will do. He already had a field day with it undecorated. At one point I told Fred to check out the tree because either Neo was in it or there was a strong wind in the house! LOL!

I definitely don't put "good" ornaments on the bottom of the tree. In the past, weeks, months after Christmas, I'd find ornaments behind the couch or under the desk. The other thing I don't do is put garlands (and light strings) on the bottom. These 2 cats don't do it so much but I once had a rather large cat who would get under the tree, stick his head up into the branches--and then come out, bringing the strings with him!
Last year I finally bought a pre-lit tree so I don't have much say about where the light strings are, but they seem to leave the wiring along.
A TIP: make a rather strong solution of dishwashing soap and water, use a cotton ball and swipe it over all the wires. That will give the wires a bitter taste and kitties tend to not chew them. You can also buy a product called Bitter Apple at many pet supply stores. It's something show dog owners use to keep dogs from chewing on themselves (and thus messing up their fab dos). It's rather expensive but a bottle lasts for eons. I have some and I often smear some on any new electrical appliance.

Brandy just knows she's the best thing under the tree lol
We had a cat that hated garland and any year we tried to put some on the tree she would pull it off. I still can't figure out how she managed to do that without disturbing any of the other decorations on the tree.

As I suspected she would, Princess waited until I put the tree skirt down before she snuggled under the tree.

That is so considerate of you to put a nice new bed under the tree just for the kitties' enjoyment! And she looks very nice on it as well.

Princess is gorgeous! Brandy is too Our new addition, Miss Darla, has a lot of fun with our tree after it gets quiet in the house. She bats at the decorations on the bottom, but she hasn't tried to chew the tree like our boys would (they had been inside so long they didn't know the tree wasn't real!) and to watch her take some of the little people (kids nativity) and bat them around and throw them in the air is hilarious! She was clawing the baby jesus with her hind legs the other night...yikes! LOL! I also have a pencil tree in the dining room that I decorate every year, but this year I had to move it out of it's corner and in front of the window because my treadmill had to go in the corner...the dog has knocked it over 3 times barking at the UPS man, the mail carrier, and the Fed Ex man!! GRRRRRR Dora!

This afternoon Brandy decided she wanted some sun in the front window--which is usually Princess's territory. Princess was sleeping in the bedroom. I snapped a picture of Brandy in the sun. Shortly afterward, Princess charged in, jumped up on the window and tried to stare Brandy down. Both had tails flicking, but Brandy held her ground, and soon the tails quieted. Once Brandy proved her point, she regally jumped down to the chaise... HER territory!

This morning we went for our annual post-Christmas breakfast on the wharf in Santa Cruz. After eating we wandered around looking at the scenery and wildlife (as if we'd never seen it before--playing tourist). A brown pelican was calmly sitting on the railing, posing for pictures. And then I saw a pod of seals or sea lions out off in the water. No otters or dolphins today, darn it.

I'm so sorry, Kit. It's hard to lose a treasured friend. Try to remember all the good times and the love and joy Moyra brought you. From her picture, she was a beauty.

All my sympathy, Kit. I expect we've all been through that--too many times. Usually you get time to prepare yourself to some extent. She was a beautiful kitty, lucky to be loved by you, and you were lucky to be loved by her.

I am so sorry to read your bad news, Kit! What a nasty shock that must have been! We have two cats - one for each of my children - so I really understand how they become a part of the family! She was beautiful!
