Thought we should have a thread to display pictures and talk about various critters in our lives. I will add photos of my dear spoiled felines eventually, but first I want to share a picture my niece sent me. She was at Griffith Park in LA last weekend and spotted this coyote "posing." Really looks like a dog at a show, doesn't it? She said that visitors feed the coyotes, and this one was watching a car that had slowed down, probably waiting to see if any food was going to be produced. But it's a rather amazing picture. The coyote looks very healthy and well fed!

Very nice picture. But it's not a good idea to feed wild animals. This causes them to lose their fear of humans which can get them into trouble, which then leads to the animal being put down. With wildlife. it better to observe and admire from a distance.
Looking forward to seeing everyone's animal pictures. Maybe some day I'll figure out how to do it myself.

But there are always people, no matter how many signs are posted, who will feed the animals. We have pelicans and various other seabirds, as well as pigeons, on the local wharf, with signs all around, stating DO NOT FEED BIRDS OR SEA LIONS... and invariably there are people standing there under the sign throwing bread or something at them.

Here's a couple more interesting animal pictures. These were taken by my cousin-in-law when she was visiting her mother-in-law, my aunt, at the retirement community where Aunt Gayle lives in Utah. I'm pretty sure the bird on the left is a Gambel's Quall, and quite possible the other one is too, but I haven't found any info yet that says that the male of the species is brilliant blue! Their markings, and especially the topnotch, are very similar otherwise. If anyone has any knowledge of these birds, please speak up.

Here is a picture of "Evil Kitty" as Kenneth calls Duke. I have taken many pictures of this cat trying to get the red eye effect but it never works LOL. His eyes always look like little laser beams

Here's my Brandy. She was rescued from a cat hoarder in a home with 80 cats!! The local SPCA accepted several of the cats to place and Brandy was the only one left when I was looking for a new cat after losing another one about 4 years ago. I thought I wanted a kitten, and Brandy was 2 years old at the time. I fell in love with her though, with all that hair and a purr like a motor boat. She also "sings," making a trilling noise while purring. She looks very much overweight, but it's mostly hair on a stubby body. She's about a pound overweight, but has held that weight since I've owned her having gained most of it at the SPCA where they had food available constantly--food she didn't have to compete for. One reason she was slow in being adopted was that hair. People didn't want a long-haired cat, but I love long-haired cats. Funny thing, the day after I told the SPCA I'd take her, some people came to the shelter specifically looking for a yellow long-haired cat. So my decision was in the nick of time. Most all-ginger yellow cats are male, but not Brandy. She's a lap cat. I cannot sit on the couch if she's in the room, because she inevitably ends up on my lap.

I'm lookin' for some pics I have on a CD somewhere of our kittehs, Bracha, Shoshi and Mullaney, but so far not found.
So let me just say they're all 'mutts', they all came to us after being rescued, and that Bracha is all over gray and white splotches, Soshi is all white except for calico markings on her head, her feet and her tail, and Mullaney is white with large orange/marmelade splotches. Bracha is 5 this year and the twinnerz are 4. All indoor cats now, but all 'fixed' for justincase.

I'll find a better picture of Princess (who is very misnamed). But I love that one of the tail. I have another of her crawling through the blind slats!
Rielle, I hope you find your pix. I love to see pet pictures!
Pet, I see what you mean about Duke's eyes. How much does he weigh? He looks big.

Yep Dukie's a big boy very long he can lay edge to edge on my queen size bed if he's a mind to lol. He weighs in the neighborhood of 20 llbs. Kenneth thinks its a bit more than that now that he has no competition for the food dish lol

I have to learn how to post pics! I had a long furred black cat who was a polydactyl (had 8 toes on each front paw) and he was awesome His name was Shadow, but I also called him "My Boy" I used to put him over my shoulder and he'd just ride on my shoulder as I walked around the house My current cat now lives with my dad cause she's an outdoor cat and there are fields for her to romp in where my dad lives, I don't want her being hit by a car up here! Her name is Sandy, and looks like Duke & Princess, a grey tiger but my dad could never remember her name (I named her Sandy cause she had an orange streak down her nose) so my dad just cals her Kitty (he also calls her him!!! WHO would name a male cat Kitty?!?!?!) so Sandy responds to Kitty and frequently leaves dead presents on the doorstep for my father (BLECH and it really grosses out my dad's girlfriend lol) My mom & stepdad have 3 crazy insane pugs, Charlie & Belle are the daddy & mommy of Sassy. Sassy lives up to her name and is very playful but doesn't like her tail touched Charlie's very protective and gets all macho and Belle(Belle-Belle as I call her) is just the sweetest girl! They are really funny and do the pug-tona a lot I also talk with them on he phone, Charlie cocks his head and listens, Sassy gets excited and licks the phone a lot and then Belle starts dancing then hs to run and find her favorite toy purple platypus and brings it to the phone and squeaks it into the phone for me ;D

Here's a better one of Princess--waiting for Santa Claus last Christmas. She's about 2 1/2 now. I got her from the SPCA when she was 10 months old and I soon found out why the manager there let me have her for half price! They called her Precious, I changed her name to Princess--and neither one fits. Little Imp would be better. If there's any mischief to be done, she's right into it. But she's also a love and likes my lap too. Gets to be fun when both cats want to be there. Her favorite trick is bringing me a fuzzy mouse (toy) in the middle of the night, yowling her head off with it in her mouth. She does it in the daytime occasionally, and one of these times I'm going to get a picture of it. Looks pretty funny. She and Brandy get along great and love to chase each other around the house. It's unusual in a certain sense because you are usually advised to bring opposite sexes together (even when fixed). But Brandy is an extremely mellow cat, and Princess had been around other cats in the shelter. They were able to be together within about 24 hours of me bringing Princess home.

Every one has seen the images of an eagle swooping majestically down and grabbing a fish. Well, we do things a little differently in Florida. We have a slow unhurried approach to life. This eagle landed in the shallow waters of Merrit Island Wildlife Refuge (within sight of the shuttles launch pad). He hopped up and down a few times and then finally got a grip on his meal and flew away. If you look carefully at the last picture you can see the fish's dorsal fin out of the water. It was a huge fish and the eagle had to struggle to gain altitude when he finally took off with it.

Amazing pix, DT. That'll teach that big fish to be swimming in shallow waters where it can be seen by an eagle-eyed... well... eagle.
I get hawks in my back yard seeking the birds that frequent my feeders. Twice that I know of a hapless mourning dove has been a victim. So far I have not been able to get a good picture of a hawk. They are alert to any noise or movement so it's impossible to go outside to try to snap one. Usually I take pictures out my bedroom window, but again, the hawk doesn't cooperate by posing in the right spot!

No, they are not flamigos. The only flamingos in Florida are the plastic variety. Roseate Spoonbills also taken at Merrit Island Wildlife Refuge.

Aw, he looks so comfy!
He's got big feet, doesn't he? Princess has very tiny feet and short claws. When she "makes bread" on me, I almost don't feel it. When Brandy does that, I definitely feel the claws!

Pet, there is no way that sweet innocent looking kitty could do anything bad. Or is he only sweet and innocent when he's asleep?
The animals are the main reason I bought a queen sized bed.

I definitely need a bigger bed. These two insist on sleeping on either side of my legs at night, which makes it interesting when I need to get up--and even more so when I get back into bed. Brandy just lets me push her around. Princess will get miffed and leave for awhile if I nudge her too much. But she usually comes back. And about 75% of the time they sleep on the bed during the day, though both will come in on the couch for long periods.

Duke has taken to using my legs as a pillow but only when I'm laying on my right side. He curls up next to me and hooks his claws in the blanket to keep me from moving lol. Guess he hasn't figured out the weight of his head alone is more than enough to keep me from being able to move my legs lol
