I was watching Puppeteer yesterday and enjoyed Artie's drunk act so much I roped several of the kids into coming and watching it. Maybe I ain't PC, but I do love watching and listening to how Ross pulls off a drunk act. The facial expressions, the vocal expressions, especially the way he used his hands.
I like Artie faking drunk so much I've put such a scene in the fanfic I'm trying hard to get finished currently, and have another planned for the one I hope to get done next.

He was pretty good playing a drunk dude! Was way funny being the drunken sailor in Watery Death and the way drunk prisoner in the cell in Arrow. ;D

True--Like when he was kinda bored drunk in Firebrand. haha He played drunk in Deadly Bed to start a ruckus near the end I remembered too. And in Bottomless Pit. I'm sure there's way more...

I love in Pupeteer when he suddenly speaks to the waitress in a perfectly clear and sober voice. Her shock is a thing of beauty. Come to think of it, another favorite moment of mine is when he starts to speak as himself and realizes he's still using the accent, like in the pit in Dragon Screamed.

I always loved Artie's drunken Shakespearian actor's exchange with Dub Taylor in TNOT Casual Killer. ;D When Dub tells Artie he missed his recital, Artie says that "he will not be deprived of the right to sit at the table of cultural ambrosia" ( or something like that ) and starts repeating his performance ;D

Yeah, except the drunk version has far more expression, both in his face and in his hands.
I just love what Ross would do with his hands when playing drunk!

I love the whole attitude of the whiskey peddler in Flaming Ghost. Especially when he admits to being 'a wee bit tiddly as proof to me customers of me unwavering faith in me own wares'!
And his 'unfeeling monster' accusation sounds so heart-broken!

Yeah, his different drunks were definitely different from one another, weren't they? Tiddly McGuffy is just such a hoot! I wouldn't even mind the beard!

Really? I brought the episode up on the computer here and watched it through a couple of times just now -- and I was just thinking how much I like a beard on a man.
When my late husband and I first met, he had a beard. The whole time we were courting (four months), he had that beard. Then shortly after we got married, he shaved it off. And it took me a week -- a week! -- to be able to look at him and recognize him reliably without his beard!
The whole time we were married, he would grow the beard till he got annoyed with it, then shave until he got annoyed with shaving, then grow it again. And the funny looks our babies would give him whenever he shaved it off anew!

I think we never saw Artie himself actually drunk, did we? It was always Artie in character pretending to be drunk. With the possible exception of the scene where Artie is forced to drink a whole pint of sherry--was that in Undead? You can see that the sherry is starting to affect him just before the scene ends. Anyway, my point is, it would be interesting to see Artie drunk for real as opposed to putting on an act. I'm sure RM would have played it differently.
And re: the sherry, I always imagine Artie going out in the alley and puking his guts out immediately afterward. The stuff would incapacitate him otherwise.

I have to disagree with you on this, Snish. I don't think a mere pint of sherry (mildly fortified wine, I believe) would affect Artie, although he might pretend it did. (And I can see him doing that for his own entertainment, even if there was not actually anyone to fool) Think of, for instance, Bluebeard guzzling whiskey in front of 'Number One Man' and the 'Rattlesnake'. As I have Jim comment in TNo Loyalty and Loss, I believe Artie has a remarkable ability to hold his liquor. It's my impression most Angels hold this opinion, although I certainly could be wrong. My friends? Mind you, I'm not clearly remembering the scene in Undead (I think I know what you're talking about, though - they put him in a room with bars across the entry, right?). Guess I'll just have to *SOB* rewatch more WWW tonight.

in Terror Stalked the Town he seemed to have quite a few in him when he went off to try to woo Marie (especially by the look on Jim's face)

But I used to be married to a man with a prodigious tolerance for alcohol. He was an alcoholic. I don't want to see Mr. Gordon that way. "Holding your liquor" isn't a measure of manliness, it's mostly a measure of how much you drink on a regular basis. Sherry is 15-20% alcohol and I certainly hope slamming a pint of it would affect Artie, although you're probably right, it wouldn't put him under the table. In the scene in question, Artie was in disguise as this nebbish who had to go into a bar looking for information, and he asked for "a small sherry." So the bartender filled a pint beer glass with it and he had to drink it all. Was this in Undead? Someone here is bound to know.

Edit after rereading Snish's post: Oops, I just got the dots connected. Yeah, that mug of sherry couldn't have been pleasant to have pounded down the way he did.
Yuppers, it was. For me that scene was all the more funny because I'm thinking "You fools have no idea of his capacity."
I use 'hold his liquor' in the sense of he could consume considerable quantities without being strongly effected, rather than that he could stay conscious long enough despite being drunk to take on a big load (Gods know I've known some of that type!). Some people do have that capacity, although I doubt to the fictional level of our Mr. Gordon.
My own capacity, by the way, is not great. Actually, it serves me well - if I drink enough to cause a hangover, I get the hangover then and there! Family trait on my mom's side. We call it 'instant hangover'. I guarantee you, that brings drinking to a halt in a hurry. I never go over a two drink limit. Mind you, I like to drink occasionally, but a bottle of rum or brandy will last months, although I admit Dripping Springs Vodka only lasts a few weeks in my freezer. (YUMMY)

You Lush!!! ;D Haha!! Just kidding. When I have a drink it's usually just a couple beers or a margarita, daqueri, blue hawaii, etc when I go out somewhere. I like those tropical drinks. However--with the holidays coming up, my traditional favorite drink at home is rum and egg nog. It just doesn't seem like Christmas without some of that!!

I know, I know. My friends have always considered me the alcoholic of the bunch! Grantair is my Les Miserable hero ("Give me brandy on my breath and I'll breath them all to death!". My mom and I used to laugh that the times either of us drank the most was sitting around my apartment nibbling a Whitman's Sampler and sipping cherry brandy. Talk about LUSHES! By the way, if anyone is fond of vodka, Dripping Springs is a local product of excellent flavor and reasonable price. Most folk around here drink Tito's (also local to my area) but I think Dripping Springs is distinctly better.

I enjoy the taste of good likker, but never liked the feeling of being drunk, and definitely not the hangover. My brother, who was in the Air Force at the time, gave me some good advice. He said when I go to a bar with friends I should order a scotch... and sip it. I could make it last most of the night while others were downing their fancier drinks. I came to really like scotch. A friend once gave me a bottle of what she said was very good sherry. I'm afraid I didn't like it very well. Lasted me for years! Some people seem to have a natural high capacity for alcohol, some not so. It's been speculated that U.S. Grant had a very low capacity. Friends were reported as saying he would be in his cups after only a drink or two--and thus the reputation of being a drunk.

Smart brother! For a lady of Scots descent, it's a terrible thing to admit, but I don't care for whiskey in any form. But I guess in that situation a brandy would work just as well and look totally cool in the snifter.
Only way I've enjoyed sherry was when my brother would make goat-cheese and blue-cheese cheesecake (savory instead of sweet) and make a ... no wait, that was a port-reduction sauce. Guess I don't care for sherry.
That about Grant makes a lot of sense. I'd never thought about it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true.

I believe I mentioned earlier (well, on some thread in this forum) that I can't drink. Literally true; my nose won't let me. As soon as I smell alcohol, I start getting queasy. C'est la vie.

It wasn't sherry, it was whiskey. That was the big joke among the bar customers. Yikes! In that case I go back to my original estimation of what Artie would (or should) do. He might be able to hold it, but he's in the middle of an investigation. He needs to be sharp. I was wondering whether a dive like that would even have sherry. (And if it did, it would be some dreadful stuff that a connoisseur like Mr. G. would have a hard time swallowing.) Welcome Nydiva! I enjoy Bailey's too. And various other things.
