I was watching Glowing Corpse lately. There were a couple of things that Ross Martin did that really made the scenes in question for me.
First, the scene where James walks into the hotel room looking for Artie and finds him sprawled face-down in the tub. He pulls him out and sees him with the breathing device he's testing on his face. Artie gets mad at James for messing up the test of the device. What made the scene for me? James repeats (can't remember the exact words), 'Breathing device?' and Artie yells, 'YES!' And a split second later he's grinning, explaining what the gizmo does. It's that rapid transition from angry to grinning that makes the scene for me.
Minutes later, as the men are looking through the dossiers Artie has compiled, the bell hop shows up with Artie's suit. Artie, in his bathrobe, pats at his pockets, then asks James to tip the bell hop for him. Watch Artie smirk as he continues to go through the dossier! Really like that.

The art of true acting is what you're doing while the other guy has the focus. Ross was always thinking and in character.
Okay, now I have to get on home and write. Ross or Artemus, it doesn't matter which one - both inspire me!

I really enjoy those moments in this episode as well. ;D
But I have to comment that this is the one episode where I think the partners are a little overly ornery with each other. I read in Sue's book that this was the first episode that Irving J. Moore directed. I don't notice that harsh edge in other episodes, I guess he was getting a feel for directing the characters and softened them a bit after that.
Still, it's a really good episode and I love the whole Artie experimenting on himself to produce life saving gadgets for Jim, much to Jim's concerned dismay.

Here's another moment, this time from TNOT Human Trigger.
Burgess Meredith, btw, is such a pleasure to watch! Yet another of my favorite actors from my childhood. I might mention -- my favorite actors are always the character actors, so it's no wonder I love Ross Martin.
But here's the moment: Jim is all tied up and wired in to be the human trigger for the dynamite explosion. And here comes Artie in disguise to distract the Bad Guy (Burgess). Artie is pretending to be a German geologist, technobabbling geological terminology, schmoozing with Burgess, finally getting Burgess to admit that he is triggering the earthquakes. Artie then switches to his normal voice and starts taking off his disguise until Burgess recognizes him. And then the moment -- all this time in disguise, Artie has been more or less eye-level with Burgess. But now, he straightens up to his own height. I caught him doing that, and it made the scene for me.
(Went to IMDB and found that Burgess was 5' 5.5" so Ross was 5 or 6 inches taller. And yet when he does that shorter-than-he-really-is posture, Ross never looks, imo, like he's stooping all that much. Amazing.)

I agree with you, Niecie! The man's talent was practically limitless. Like he could just project what he wanted people to see, and that's what they saw.

Just watched “The Night of the Murderous Spring” (for only the second time this week ;D ). What stood out was Artie’s behavior after the “suspenders” line. That line could have been forgotten quickly, yet he frequently fidgeted with his trousers.

Hi, mrcrf!
It occurred to me to mention the opening scene of Inferno -- no less than three things Ross did there that I really loved.
First, right after the wagon stops and the men are brushing past Artie, pretty much ignoring him -- the second guy to pass him almost knocks the jug from Artie's hand. He responds with "Watch the jug!" But it's the delivery of the line that I like. He all but sings it: WATCH... The... jug.
Second, Artie then goes over to the wagon driver to ask him what's up. The driver requests the jug, so Artie passes it over. While the driver is drinking, Artie makes this small gesture. A really tiny gesture, but so eloquent, saying that the guy is taking too much; give it back!
Third, the word "catched" -- Artie pronounces it with the vowel of "caught" -- dunno why, but that word really tickles me.

Thanks for the welcome, Dieter and Niecie. Can I mention a little thing I dislike? In “The Night of the Cossacks,” Artie says that he can speak Russian, but not read it. That always irritates me. By the way, mrcrf represents the actors’ initials (their real names).

Oh, I see that now.
I used to be able to sound out Cyrillic, but only knew a few words of Russian.

So I assume it stands for Martin Ross Conrad Robert--But what's the "F" for then?? Btw---Cossacks is my absolute least favorite, WORST episode of the 104 they made. So anything Artie says in it doesn't really matter because the whole thing was just a total massive BOMB of horrible everything.

By the way, mrcrf represents the actors’ initials (their real names). Welcome to the board, mrcrf. It's not unusual for someone to know how to speak a language but not read it. If Artie learned the language as a child, say, from an older relative, he might not have been taught the Cyrillic symbols for the letters. I can read quite a bit of Spanish and French, and a little German--but can't speak any of them!

Ohhh Nooo!!!! I have failed in my duties of being a devoted fan of his!!!!! You didn’t call him Rosencrantz (or Guildenstern), so I’ll forgive you. ;D I can still read Russian and French, but can’t speak either very well. In “The Night of the Tartars,” Jim says, “Artie is fluent in Russian.” Two seasons later, we’re told Artie can speak it but not write it? That’s just so...out of character. Grr.

Haha--I notice you don't even see YOURSELF fit to teach me how to be a good boy!! ;D I'm the innocent one I didn't say I was the good one LOL What's the point of being innocent if you're not good? Come on, forgive Dieter. We're pretty much all bad together here! As far as the Russian thing, I've always explained it away by saying that Artie learned Russian by ear but never learned the Cyrillic alphabet. He could speak fluently but still not read it. I know, it's implausible, and it's obviously a plot contrivance for Cossacks, but it's possible.
