As I lay playing dead on the floor of the parlor car I could hear Artie playing his role to perfection. What happened next I couldn’t have imagined although I probably should have.
I realized a split second too late what was about to happen as Capt. Dushan fired. I held my breath and rolled, hoping he had missed Artie.
The fight ensued quickly and I didn’t have a chance to spare a look to the doorway. But I knew in the back of my mind something was wrong. True, Artie would occasionally let me fight alone but not in an instance like this. And my worry kept me from dispatching my assailants as quickly as I normally would. I shot a glance to the doorway just briefly and found a small measure of comfort as Artie was moving but far too slowly for my taste. Looking back at Talamantes I quickly decided that I could spare a moment to check on Artie. I let Talamantes go and he fell down onto the clawed hand he had used in so many deaths already. One last glance at Talamantes and I was across the car in just a few steps tossing the chair out of the way.
As I helped Artie up I noticed the blood on his shoulder and my heart leapt into my throat, I had been too slow. I found my voice but it was much softer than I would have liked “Artie.”
He shook his head in true Artie fashion, “I’m ok… I’m ok.” I spared him a sideways glance not really believing him. It was because of that disbelief that I was close enough to him to catch him when he fell. He had laughed briefly with myself and Queen Leandra when he suddenly grabbed his arm tighter and pitched forward.
“Artie?!” I lowered him to the floor as Leandrea handed me a pillow for his head, so focused was I on Artie that I hadn’t noticed she had moved.
I was vaguely aware of her stating her intentions to go and get a doctor I simply nodded as my hand found a pulse and I breathed a small measure of relief. Carefully I unbuttoned his shirt and was surprised to see the spreading red stain on his undershirt. The red of his dress coat belied the amount of blood he was actually loosing. I grabbed the throw that had been displaced in the scuffle and used it to staunch the flow, wondering what was taking so long. I spoke softly “Come on Artie, Hang in there.”
I was answered by a low moan as Artie stirred however briefly "Hey Artie, can you hear me?" I knew he wasn’t going to answer but that didn't stop the foolish act of asking. It’s amazing what a person will do to get some relief in a situation like this. Hearing footsteps I spun, hand on my gun, when Leandra came in with the doctor and sheriff in tow.
I watched as the doctor briefly checked Talamantes. I just want to scream at him to leave him be, but I keep my cool trying not to show my fear as the blood slips past my fingers. The doctor moved my hands and examined Artie and looked at me.
"We need to move him to a more comfortable place. I need to remove the bullet."
I looked at the Sheriff and the mess that was the parlor car, "We can take him to his room."
The Doctor looked at Leandra "I will need some water."
She nodded and moved to the galley while we moved Artie. I stepped back as the doctor got to work and he looked up at me "Mr. West, Please wait outside."
I shook my head, I was not going anywhere. Some deep seated fear had me rooted to the spot. period I just knew if I walked outta the room Artie would die and I wouldn't be there. So I refused to move and the doctor returned to Artie. It seemed like forever but in reality it had only been about 30 minutes from the time the doctor showed until Artie was resting comfortably. I thanked the doctor and busied my self with doing a quick repair job on the door. I would have workers in tomorrow.
I soon settled in a chair next to Artie and watched the rise and fall of his chest and the words from just a few days ago rang in my ears "Your a sitting duck out here." I had told Artie and he had replied in true form with "I am perfectly willing to abdicate but no one wants the job." and I knew tonight I had let him be that duck willing to sacrifice his life for a country neither of us would ever visit. And I had been too slow, way too slow. Maybe I was getting too old for this job, maybe I was loosing my touch. I drifted into an uneasy slumber and thankfully I was awoken from that sleep by a moan from the bed. I rose up and turned the lantern up.
"Artie?" Dark eyes met mine as he spoke.
"Who hit me with a horse?"
I smiled in relief and gave a soft chuckle "No horse but it's a good thing you’re not a werewolf."
"OH right Dushan and Talamantes, Did we win?"
"Yes, and next time move a little faster."
Artie half laughed and stopped "Oww Jim don't make me laugh."
I became serious again and it didn't go unnoticed as my friend, no my brother, spoke "James, there was nothing you could have done."
After a long moment I spoke "I know, Artie, It's just..." I stopped when I heard soft snoring and I turned down the lantern and settled back into my chair. What needed to be said could wait for now....
