Please excuse me while I seek for your expertise for the sake of at least one story I'm working on.
Here's the question: Could switching the clothing of the person they know and carry most often to someone else confuse a horse so that he or she would stay with the person wearing those clothes?
Obviously this is intended as a trick by the bad guys in my latest story. But if this could happen, then the good guys could use it in turn... maybe?
Thanks for putting up with my lack of horse-sense. I am also checking for some general source of information. But naturally, I come to you folks first.

I'm no expert, but I did have a horse. She knew me no matter what I was wearing. She knew me by sight, smell and the sound of my voice. She also knew my family the same way.
So, in my opinion, the trick would not work.
If I recall correctly, Jim's horse knew him well and threw off people who tried to steal him.

I would think the horse would know by scent and voice. However, I feel the same about cats, and i scared one of my cats once by coming out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around my head. i Had to speak to him to assure him it was me!

I've worked with horses, Sidekick is right they go by smell and body language, horses are smart.
I put on masks, disguises and different clothes I couldn't fool my horses, nor my dogs.
Cats, what's that saying about cats?
