I have always been curious about this drink. I have never seen it for sale before, but I noticed it in Target this morning and bought some. Tastes a lot like root beer.
I could never tell if Artie likes it or not when he says "Its the free sarsaparilla that gets me." in Poisonous Posey.

I know that you can eat the leaves of the tree that they make sarsaparilla from, my neighbors had a tree...at least that's what Paula told me it was when I was 8. Off to google...

Ok, she didn't lie, really. The tree was Sassafras... which they quit using as widely when they found it's a health risk. Thanks Paula... Sarsaparilla is used as the basis for a soft drink, frequently called by the same name, or Sasparilla. It is also a primary ingredient in old fashioned-style root beer, in conjunction with Sassafras, which was more widely available prior to studies of its potential health risks. Sarsaparilla drinks feature widely in American popular culture, particularly in works related to the American West and the pioneer period. Sarsaparilla is not readily available in most countries, although many pubs and most major supermarket chains in the Philippines, Malaysia, the United Kingdom and Australia stock sarsaparilla-flavored soft drinks.Quoted from Wikipedia Smilax regelii

Sarsaparilla is an ingredient for root beer. As you say, tastes like root beer. I believe they add other flavors to create what we know and love as root beer.

Did you notice that it said it was believed to be a cure for a number of diseases, including syphilis?

We use to chew on the twigs from a bush we called sassafras as well, and had been told that they made root beer from it.

I remember my dad telling me it was called root beer 'cause they used the root of the sassafras tree to make it.

you guys haven't done your research on ads I see check out advertisements in old books and newspapers, cured the common cold and everything I love to read the ads in the old newspapers and magazines for miracle health products. Some are pretty amazing. They cured everything! Of course, Coca Cola originated as a health drink. No one seems to believe that's the case today.

yeah my best friend has real coke syrup for stomach issues I think.
I know that Diet Coke made me the most depressed and miserable person ever and I was addicted to it when I worked at the theme-park. I hated coffee and I loved coke so that was my caffeine of choice...

You know, y'all are making me glad I don't drink colas. I don't care for the taste of them, but there was a certain incident when I was a child that turned me off them for good.
(Umm... grossness warning...)
I was at my grandma's house one day, and she was going to get me a Coke to drink. She picked up a bottle and held it up to the light first before pouring it for me, so I asked her why she was doing that. And she told me -- this is it! this is the gross part! -- that she was checking to make sure there were no roaches in the bottle.
Ewwwwwww...............!
Dunno how she got the idea that there might be such a thing in the Coke. But it put me right off permanently.

Soda is like any other food or drink. Moderation is the key. Drinking a 6-pack a day is not good. I used to work with a woman who would come in the morning carrying a huge bottle of Pepsi, which she would drink all morning, go out to lunch and come back with another to drink all afternoon! I don't know what happened to her but I can't imagine it was anything good as far as her health was concerned.

I never drink diet soda. I'd rather go thirsty! Years ago I trained myself not to drink soda by reminding myself that it's sugar water with no nutrition--before you even get to any consideration of what they're putting in it to create a taste. It's not natural or healthy to be constantly eating or drinking stuff that has calories without nutrition. It just makes your body hungrier for real food.

Ace our water here in Western Pa (at least my municipality) is fluoridated. My kids teeth are full of cavities because my husband was giving them bottled water. As soon as I put a stop to that they quit getting cavities. I grew up with this same water.
Now I have to agree about the diet coke (et al) but sometimes I have to have something dark and fizzy. Not often though. I make iced tea but even that has lost its appeal in this cold snap we're having.

Yeah, the guy who invented Vaseline would eat a spoonful of it each day -- claimed it kept him healthy.

Ace, here in Texas we have truly impressive cockroaches as well. I'm sure the whole neighborhood heard me shrieking the first time I saw a Texas cockroach after moving down here -- especially since it was in the bed where I was resting my pregnant self after being out in the HEAT.
For that matter, Texas mosquitos are so big, they are rumored to carry off small game...
Btw, when I said cola, I meant that particular flavor. I do on occasion have a Dr Pepper or a fruit-flavored soda. Mostly I drink water -- have a 32 oz sport bottle that I go through maybe 4 or 5 times a day. Oh, and here in south Texas the tap water is nasty tasting! I just went to the kiosk this morning and bought 10 gallons of water, at 15 cents a gallon.

Water from their canteens ;D Yeah. But seeing them drink water on the train would probably not be very interesting. * I'm not going to say it, but I may crack up for the self-control. * Then again, probably in most towns they stuck to beer because you can't trust the water a lot of places. Oh, yes, and on the sassafras front - when I was young my uncle sent us a root from a sassafras tree, and I loved chipping it up and making tea. Delish! Especially with brown sugar. What's this about health risks from sassafras?

Question (for a fanfic I'm writing) -- what would the guys order to drink at a restaurant? See, I don't (can't) drink and know nothing about anything alcoholic. Scene I'm writing: Artie is at this little tavern waiting for Jim to show up so they can have lunch and discuss the current case. Waitress comes over, so Artie decides to order something to drink for the waitress to bring once Jim arrives, and they'll order the meals once he's there. So I thought: what would he order? Beers?
After writing that, it occurred to me that it's rather like the scene in Sudden Death, y'know? I have no idea what Artie ordered in that scene, but I don't think it was beer.
Anyway -- anyone with more experience in this direction, what would Artie order?

Artie seems more like a wine lover if you ask me. While Jim is more the beer and whiskey type. That matches their personalities much better, don't you think?

I think even coffee wouldn't be out of place--as Silver points out, the water might not be trustworthy, so they're safest having it either brewed into alcohol or boiled for coffee (or tea, but American men didn't favor it at that time). Re eating Vaseline: Yikes! Maybe he thought it was good for his health, but I can imagine what it was doing....

Wow, Ace, you mean you live in a place that gets rain???
The joke going around down here a while back was about 5-year-olds who didn't know what rain was. At the time, I had a 5-year-old, and, yeah, he didn't know what rain was!

I found out what this 'rain' is you are talking about. We heard about that stuff and named it 'gravity water'.
*SNERK* I wrote this before I saw the accusation of pulling the thread back on topic!

Not sure if it's worth it to have more gravity just so we can get more gravity water. I mean, wouldn't that also mean I would weigh more there than here?
(Or am I overthinking again?)
