So over on my Mr. Lucky forum we have discussed Henry Mancini because he wrote the music for the show, and because he grew up right down the river from me, about 20 minutes away. He went to school with my middle school band director and with the grandfather of my high school boyfriend (if I remember correctly). Anyway... A woman who came into the library all the time and got 3-4 bags of books every two weeks (YES!) recently passed away. She was 91...her obituary stated that she sang with Henry Mancini's band and met her husband who played the saxophone in the band! I was stunned, one because I came that close and didn't know and two, since I never knew I couldn't pick her brain!! ( Her son was my swimming teacher in high school. ) It says 1939-41, but Mancini didn't graduate high school until 1942...not sure how that worked, but things were different in those days. www.timesonline.com/your_news/obituaries/lois-e-bittner/article_ed8bf6c7-0241-5f40-be34-341a0b3fde6d.html?mode=jqm

That is, I doubt Mancini had a professional band before he graduated high school. Very cool that you knew her, though!

You know, I was reading through his biography and I think that he did have his own band in high school. Have to get that book again to check.
