The library where I work recently had a used book sale, with books brought in by our patrons. There were two that I snagged when they came in, just for the curiosity factor, including Ginger Rogers and the Riddle of the Scarlet Cloak. I started reading it and even though the story is cheesy (Ginger spends 6 days a week working as a phone operator in a luxury hotel... ) the writing is better than a lot of current books. IMO, of course. www.ebay.com/itm/Ginger-Rogers-and-The-Riddle-of-the-Scarlet-Cloak-An-original-story-/160827619091?pt=Antiquarian_Collectible&hash=item257212b713I have to find the other one (I think I left it in the car) to remember the other title. I think it's Jane Wyman, but I can't remember, nor can I find a copy on eBay if it is JW.

How interesting. I had no idea books were written about the stars having adventures.

Yes, there were lots of those books written around the forties-fifties! Cheesy, but so fun. Mysteries are awesome. Mysteries with celebrities or favorite fictional characters are even more awesome.

I might do that!
Those kinds of books I like to think of as "official fanfiction", rather than their "tie-in" moniker, haha. And then there's sequels that were being written and published for some of the classics, even way back when. "Official fanfiction" is also kind of what I consider those, including many of the Pollyanna and the Heidi sequels, since they weren't written by the same person as the original novels. And I wonder when Sherlock Holmes "pastiches"/fan-written published stories started being written. Those are pretty much just fanfiction, even though they don't carry the term.
I think the first thing written that was actually considered fanfiction by the general populous was Captain Kirk/Mr. Spock slash in a fanzine....

Actually W M Thackery wrote a sequel to Ivanhoe called Rowena and Rebecca in 1850 where Rowena and Athelstane die and Wilfrid marries a converted Rebecca. For anyone who's interested, the sequel can be found here:- www.hicom.net/~oedipus/books/randr.htmlFanFiction is not as new as they would like us to think!

I have a bunch of Doctor Who books that basically qualify in my mind as Fanfiction. They vary as to their quality and which doctor they use.
There were also Star Trek Fanfiction compilation books written long before it became popular. I still have a couple of them from the 70's I think.
I am a serious book hoarder, so I have all sorts of things from the 70's. Unless the dog eats it (which has happened a number of times), it never gets thrown away or sold in a garage sale.
