I really don't know why the school does that. This past school year they sent out a ballot for parents to vote on how many Saturday school days there would be. Around Labor Day there is always a Saturday 'camp' day, but other than that, who knows why they do what they do?

They probably have to get in a certain number of days through the year. Do they have extra holidays? Or does the school leave out in the summer earlier than others? (Perhaps they are a precaution against snow days!)

Heh -- considering it has snowed down here just once in the past hundred years or so...
Yes, they do need to get in a certain number of days, but could do that with regular weekdays. So ??
The Saturday school days are generally something special, such as the 'camp' day and today's academic decathlon. Career Day, when they have it, is on a Saturday too.

On the train (still Amtrak) home. First, how could I NOT have a blast with all the lovely, lovely folks who have welcomed meinto their incredible "family". I am proud to be so honored.
Second,if I'm needed, you bet I'd come up and do anything I could for James and Patty. With the exception of getting into uniform. I do NOT have a Starfleet body by any stretch of the imagination. I don't have calves; -I have cows!!
And third, would you believe James is not only determined to match colors and fabrics to the original costumes, but he was saying the wales (space between the ridges) on a specific corderoy material should be wider!
THAT'S how dedicated the man is!!!
Oh yeah! I'm totally hooked on these people and I ADORE Patty and James. To the extent that Patty and I were in a fabric store and I bought a costume dress pattern - cause There's no doubt I'll make it back if at all possible
I'll try to post more later in the week, but it's going to be a crazy one for me. SO much happening with my volunteer position at Marvell Rep.

Still waiting for the play-by-play report here... Did you have to wear That Costume again? And photos. Want photos. Maybe later in the week. Reeeeeaaaallllly busy! I already did two mini-reports! Guess no one noticed!! No photos, really. No one had time. Just one of me and several of the gals in costume. Patty has them if she wants to post. And, no, not That Costume. I borrowed a long skirt from Marvell Rep and cobbled the rest together myself. It actually looked pretty good! We were only filmed from the waist up. Again, I have to add: Patty and James RULE!

Sorry it took me so long to "report". Real life has had me spinning and I expect that to continue at least through January. Pardon any typos or brain farts, if I don't get this posted tonight, I don't know when I'll get another chance.
Oh - and since I HOPE these "adventures" will be recurring, I've decided to name them in the WWW tradition.
Thus:
WWW - TNOT of the Diva’s Return (Part I)
(December 9-11, 2011)
Friday Yeah, you can see what a terrible influence these folks have had on me! And it’s Part I because I darn well hope to go back yet again!
Even though it was “just” a “pick up” shot, the lure of the West (actually far North) proved too much for me. Snish couldn’t make it this time (sniffle, sob), so I ventured forth by train (Amtrak, not the Wanderer).
Actually, since I was the only one coming up on Friday, it turned out more convenient to meet up with Patty in Schenectady, where she was picking up costumes from a rental place. That was absolutely fine with me as it gave us a chance to have a loooong chat on the two hour (or so) drive up to Ti (that’s Ticonderoga for the uninitiated).
On the way up, Patty and I dropped by a fabric store (for her to scout out possible costume material). Well, by the time we left, I was already thinking of patterns and fabric in case I could coax my untouched-in-over-20-years sewing machine back to life. Oh the spell these people weave!
As it turned out, Patty and I were booked at the same motel (duh, it was the only one still open during winter), so we were able to cancel my reservation last minute and share hers. Just say the name “James Cawley” in Ti and it produces instant cooperation!
What I thought would be a quiet, early night turned into treat after treat after treat. The first was that we met James for dinner. And, Silver, you were saying you wanted to hug him...well... ;D!
Anyway, after dinner we adjourned to James’s house. What a treasure trove! The telegraph key was on a counter, just waiting for James to complete it’s fake book housing. (Of course I tapped it.) The horse statue from the train stood nearby and James showed me how closely it matched the original. There was also the scale model cannon from the mantelpiece that matched exactly - right down to the serial number engraved on the barrel. James brought out the glass globes for the gaslight lamps and said that since the green ones are not manufactured anymore, anywhere, by anyone (and believe me he looked), he had to “settle” for duplicates of the red ones used in the reunion movies. Perfectionist, much?
James is also in the process of hiring a master woodcarver to duplicate the intricate scrollwork within the Wanderer. As for the simpler carving, James is working on that himself - as evidenced by the panels from the train propped up in one corner. Not to mention loads and loads of costumes in varying stages of progress - oh, those gorgeous tapestry vests! James even hauled out and demonstrated the sleeve gun!
But best of all, I got to see the “teaser” (or at least the finished parts of it). Snish, you’re a star!! I’m not as much since I was turned to Snish in “conversation”. You only get a split second glimpse of my face in profile before I turn. But that’s what extras are for - NOT to mug for the camera. I’m THRILLED nonetheless.
And the CGI is incredible in that you’ll never realize that it IS CGI. Only Snish and I would notice since we were there to see what wasn’t there that now is, and what was there that now isn’t. (Huh?) You would not believe what effort was put into that very short glimpse of Snish and me; they would have saved a bundle if they (easily) cut it. I won’t divulge what was done (and hopefully I’ll still remember the terminology) until the teaser is shown or Patty decides to tell. There is also a GREAT (sneaky) extra that the particularly-sharp eyed will howl with laughter over. James had to point it out to me. Also, the care which was taken with regards to accuracy is astounding.
Then James was showing Patty (with me eagerly looking over her shoulder) tons of clips from his mind-boggling Star Trek productions. I got previews! They are also tres, tres cool. And I hadn’t known that James was an extra in the latest Star Trek movie. Look for him (eiyh much shorter hair) in a gold tunic about 3/4 way into the film (Checkov nearly bowls him). But James is NOT an extra - he’s an extra SPECIAL!
It was getting late and time to leave, but actually the night had just begun. Patty and I talked, and talked, and t-a-l-k-e-d late into the night. On every subject under the sun. She’s a great gal and it’s easy to see why this is all such a wondrous experience with two such terrific leaders at the helm.
Saturday Morning - so soon. Patty and I wandered over to the Hot Biscuit for some much-needed wake-up fuel before heading over to Retro Film Studios to load equipment for the shoot. No, sorry, the train was still unfinished and in pieces; but I DID get to peek in at the bridge of the Enterprise. Holy sh*t! It couldn’t have been more real! Goosebumps!
Met a whole bunch of swell guys - hi Ron, Gary, Scott, Scotty and my newly-found theatrical buddy Terry - and hauled lights, sandbags and “stuff” right along with them.
Then ‘twas off to the location, unload and get into cozzie. This time I brought my own (borrowed a long skirt from my theatrical rep company’s inventory and added a frilly blouse). Our “dressing room” this time was a ladies’ room. No major makeup or hair for this shot. Or I should say “no major makeup”. The hair (wig) I wore was another matter. It’s aliiiiiiiive! But I’ll let that be a surprise for when the teaser is shown or Patty decides to post a picture.
The filming itself was lightening fast. It had to be - we only had our location for two hours. A quick pan back and forth with varying “audience reactions” and it was over. Then out of the costumes, reload the equipment and off to the House of Pizza for an apres-shoot meal and chat.
Lucky me sat right across from Terry (so we could regale each other with stories theatrical) and next to the man himself - James! Terry also kept us spellbound with his professional level card tricks. So good, they were scary! So it was dinner and a show! Such fun!
And let me assure one and all here that’s it’s very much a two-way love affair between James and this forum. He repeatedly stressed how much he appreciates all the support, warmth and respect you all have shown towards his labor of love. He likes us; he really likes us!
After dinner, we made the final trip back to the studio to unload. Then it was time to call it a night. Or a morning - cause Patty and I were off on another gabfest and I got to see several clips of James’s jaw-droppingly great Elvis act. Equally amazing is how he copies all those iconic costumes in such authentic detail. Himself! Talent with a capital “T” - no, make that all capitals. And, lordy!, can that man shake it! I still can’t get “Heartbreak Hotel” out of my noggin.
Sunday Already? Don’t wanna get upl don’t wanna...breakfast with James? I’m up, I’m up! More Trek talk, more WWW talk. They’re taking our pleas for merchandise to heart. Lots of good stuff coming - details to be worked out. I threw out so many “wants”, it’s a wonder they didn’t throw me out! We’re going to be broke, but happy. And definitely DVDs (with me begging for “bloopers” to be included).
One final sojourn to James’s house, where he showed me a few more costumes in progress. And would you believe some of the outfits are made from exact copies of the original patterns? James is such a fiend for accuracy. He says that even if the viewers may not notice such small details, he end result will “feel right”; and he’ll settle for nothing less. He showed me some corduroy material that matched the exact color he was looking for (for Artie’s fringed vest), but felt that the wales (spaces between the ridges) were not quite wide enough. He’s THAT exacting.
Then final hug times and I was loathe to let go. Since I still had several hours left before the ONE daily train out of Ti, Patty kindly kept me company as we leisurely browsed the ONE store in all the town still open. Walmarts. I would have waited at the station - IF there was a station! All there was is a glassed-in cubicle by the tracks. Culture shock!
So was it worth 3 days and nearly 16 hours of travel time (not to mention expense)? YOU BET! I’m ready for the next shoot. Fingers crossed. Cause they tell me I’m “family” now and I'm darned proud of it!

Wow, thanks for the report! And now I'm sort of ... terrified... to see the teaser. ;D I would have loved going to the studio and James's house, maybe someday.
So which hotel was open, the Super 8 or the Best Western?
Waiting for that teaser now...

Regarding the cutaway coat that we had a discussion about sometime back, I was doing screen caps for TNOT Arrow and noted that Artie wore a cutaway coat in the early scenes of that episode, but it is the "taupe" coat, not burgundy. Still on the lookout for the burgundy!

Great report, diva! Thanks for sharing! I do believe you're hooked. <g> I know the feeling.
And, just another example of the lengths taken to get it right, when the bridge set you saw at the studio is completely lit, we're using 25,000 watts of electricity.

So which hotel was open, the Super 8 or the Best Western? Waiting for that teaser now... Both Best Western and Super 8 were open, but Best Western didn't have the low winter rates. So Super 8 it was. Not fancy, but at least the bed was comfortable. Though I'd sleep on a rock if it means being able to afford the next shoot! I HAVE to go back for when they film the varnish car scenes; I've already told James I want a pic (or several ) with him and Paul on the train!

Fabric Shop?? Private or like chain like JoAnn's? (the way you phrased it I am glad it wasn't a Walmart lol but unfortunately Walmart is the only place to get fabric that's less than an hour's drive!) I loooove making costumes! I only made 2 so far though. The first one was Renn. and not bad considering it was my first try with sewing machine! The second one came out waaay nicer (was also waaay harder) I wanted to be Little Bo-Peep for halloween (I was also panhandling at the town Halloween street fair for my church's food pantry) so I took a colonial pattern (I don't recall if it was McCalls or Simplicity) I did the arms and bodice sides and drapes in a deep purple and the bodice front and skirt I did in a lavander tiny flower print on a white background (due to the fact that I had a bad cold and it was a low cut bodice for this shy modest lass and it was chilly out I wore a white turtleneck under it) It was beautiful and I want to wear it again but I hope it didn't get lost when my sister moved into my bedroom when I was in London! (never had time to look for it) I wish I had a pic of it! I really want to make a civil war era costume though all the shaping frightens me a little but that's what makes it exciting

There's a positive dearth of fabric stores in Queens. I've just recently looked on-line and the nearest store is in Nassau county (a good half hour drive). And it's a Jo-ann's. Of course the garment district in NYC is loaded with fabric stores, but I'm on a budget. Or at least I'm trying to be on a budget. The $$$ I've spent in the last few months in the name of Ross Martin,... But I'm hoping there's some left of a bolt of gorgeous brocade fabric that my rep company recently acquired for costumes; I'm calling dibs if there's any remnants! But to find time to actually sew...that's another matter!

Funny I thought JoAnn's was everywhere. I've had one down the street from me here in Simi Valley my whole life, basically. Best store for crafts and things all the time. We had a few competing stores here just like it--Beverly's, Michaels, etc, but they didn't last as long as JoAnn's. Well--Michaels is still around but they just moved the store a little further away. Beverly's went under completely and turned into a Fresh & Easy supermarket. Haha.

we have Michael's & uhhh dang what was the name of the other one... crud I forget! They used to have lots of yarn but now the yarn supply in that store is dwindling I have gotten some actually really nice gold brocade for the corset for my Renn costume and the skirt was a heavy forest green cloth (probably supposed to be for curtains, but I LOVE forest green!!)
