I'm sure we've all had this happen to us. You have a great idea for a story, maybe even get started writing it, then suddenly realize something in the show makes your basic premise go amiss.
Mine right now is that I actually started working on a conversation between Jim and Artie where Artie is complaining about how he felt when he thought Jim was dead in TNOT Big Blast. Jim was going to counter with how at least Artie didn't have the body right there and bury it with full military honors, as he did with Artie in TNOT Pistoleros.
Then I suddenly realized that BB occurred in Season 2 and P occurred in Season 4!

Perhaps just chop it off at full military honors?

do the eps have to be *sequential*? I mean only a handful even give what particular year
I only took Season 1 as being early in their careers and the rest didn't matter too too much...

It's that cannon thing with me. The events in Big Blast obviously happened well before the events in Pistoleros. I can't pretend otherwise. And the whole vignette is based on the comparison between the two incidents. I don't think I can rescue this one.

We know it did because we have the seasons pretty well memorized and we know that the Jim/Artie bond developed as the show progressed, but as redhead points out, very few of the episode show any sequence (mostly Dr. Loveless & Count Manzeppi). Season one covers at least 2 years (or is it more, I can't remember the initial date given in Inferno). I could readily accept the discussion you describe in a fanfiction.

What season do you have your story set in? If it's set between the events of BB and P, then you'll have to figure out a rewrite. If it occured after P, then you shouldn't have a problem with it as is.

This story takes place the morning after the end of Big Bang.
Fortunately, the story has morphed into being centrally about a different issue, and I was able to substitute a reference to TNOT Deadly Spring, after all.
I finally figured out that vignettes are what short-short stories really are. No more trying to fit a plot into 1500 words or less.

Well that answers my question at the end of your fic when I was Beta reading! LOL! I kind of thought the line "You didn’t think you’d seen me die, or that you were the one who killed me.” was sufficient reference to TNOT Deadly Spring for loyal Westies! *SIGH* My problem is I sometimes get a touch too subtle, and forget subtlety should be based on providing a reasonable amount of information. If I'm going to start writing mysteries (watch for the 'Blind Bassoonist' series someday in the future), I need to work on that.

Silver don't beat yourself up, it's more than likely me...I can be somewhat obtuse during an initial reading.
