...or so it seems. i have been watching the first season DVDs of "Tales of Wells Fargo" a western series that aired 1957-62, starring Dale Robertson (a young and very handsome Dale Robertson). I'm seeing lots of familiar faces as guest stars. "Hoss," "Wishbone," and "Uncle Jesse" all appeared in a single episode. But Russell Johnson was in an episode, and out of curiosity I looked him up on IMDB. I noticed that his second wife (to whom he was married for 30 years until her death) was named Kay Cousins, and her name had a link, indicating she was also in show biz somehow. So I clicked on it. Turns out Kay Cousins appeared in TNOT Turncoat--as "the matron." I'm assuming she was the lady who expressed sympathy for the poor fake preacher. So we had not only The Skipper and Thurston Howell in a WWW episode, but the wife of The Professor.

That's cool. Don't forget, we also had Mary Ann.

Oh, forgot about Mary Ann. I guess the only ones who didn't show up were Mrs. Howell and Gilligan himself!

Yeah and Ginger, too.
I know some people get irked by the jokes made on that episode with the Skipper but I loved it. Calling James West his "little buddy." ;D

I thought I had seen a review somewhere that mentioned the connection between Gilligans Island and WWW. They thought Bob Denver would have made a perfect villian. If anyone is interested or hasn't seen it, here's the link: thedvdlounge.com/2008/03/25/the-wild-wild-west-the-fourth-season-dvd-review/ I also love the ending paragraph: "The Wild Wild West’s cancellation was completely premature. The fourth season wasn’t close to coasting on fumes. Conrad and Martin maintained their wonderful repartee. Shame on the torch and pitchfork hippies that thought taking this show off the air would make America a peaceful place. History has proved these people wrong since after The Wild Wild West went off the air, the average high school became as lawless as the Wild West."

I remember seeing scenes of the original pilot that was filmed when the show was being shopped to CBS, and John Gabriel played the professor. The suits at the network didn't care for him, so Russell Johnson was cast. Did you know that Jerry VanDyke turned down the role of Gilligan to star in My Mother The Car?

I found the name on IMDB. I wondered if it was used in the pilot also.
How long did My Mother the Car last compared to Gilligan? One of those fateful decisions.

I think the Professor's name was used in the reunion movie.

My Mother the Car only lasted for one season (30 episodes). Gilligan's Island last for 99 episodes. (Three seasons).
I'm sure that Jerry Van Dyke regretted turning down that role. From what I read, MMTC hasn't been released either legally or illegally. It became a catchword meaning bad tv.

I don't think Gilligan would have lasted as long with Jerry Van Dyke. Bob Denver was certainly the right choice! Of course that is my opinion ;D

YGal, thanks for that interesting link...here is my favorite line from the article, about Ross and the demise of the show: The man climbed back in the saddle and the network shot his horse.

Ooh! Here's another one! The Wild Wild West: The Fourth Season proves that this series did not run out of ideas and sputter to death. It’s disgusting that self righteous hooligans killed James West.

Those are excellent lines, Apple.
It would have been interesting to see how Jerry Van Dyke would have fared as Gilligan. He's very talented and a different kind of actor.
If we never saw Bob Denver in the role, we would have accepted Van Dyke and maybe, just maybe, it would have worked.
But that...we'll never know.

It's kind of like speculating what WWW would have been like if Rory Calhoun had been signed as Jim West. The dynamics--and the stories--would probably been entirely different. I love Rory Calhoun but I have difficulty seeing him as Jim West now.
And also, suppose RC had gotten the role in I Dream of Jeannie? Sometimes hard to imagine but...

RC as Tony?? All that shirtlessness along with Jeannie's costume? It would never have gone past the censors!!

Oh man, I would love to have seen RC's test footage! I always thought he would have done well in a comedy series. ;D
