Last night I walked into the living room where my husband was watching TV. During the opening scenes of (CSI?) some dude's body was blown out of a trailer and landed on a windshield. It was ripped apart, dismembered, bloody, gory with scorched smashed skull, oozing mouth and eye sockets...oh puullleeez....must I continue?
For the life of me this morning, I cannot imagine what was so horrifically violent about WWW that CBS just had to cancel it. Was it Jim's hand to hand combat? Couldn't have been the blood-you hardly ever saw any. Was it the body count - no more than Gunsmoke or Bonanza. Was it the lack of warm fuzzy story lines? Was it the creative ways our hero's enemies tried to dispose of them or attempt to torture them? I know it was the 60's and family values and all but really....can anyone identify specific scenes that made CBS's blood run cold?

Even as a kid I never considered the fight scenes to be "violence". For me, it was like watching a dance, the choreography was so beautiful. On WWW they did have a tendency to kill people left, right and center, but they usually deserved it. I would have said the body count per episode was a lot higher than Bonanza. I never watched Gunsmoke so I can't comment on that. For a non-violent show, Star Trek had quite a high body count, hence the "red shirt" syndrome.
Compared to many cartoons, WWW was tame!

From what I've read and heard, WWW was CBS's sacrificial lamb to the "anti-violence" critics in Washington and elsewhere. They used Ross's heart attack and Robert's recent injuries as an excuse.
The 1960s were a completely different era, a time of transition. Older adults were still reeling from the onslaught of rock & roll and movies were starting to show a little more than a chaste close-mouthed kiss. WWW was really wholesome family enertain compared to some of the movies--the good guys always won.
I don't remember watching any television show from the 60s where I felt I needed to avert my eyes as I do for shows like Bones (which I love) and others that insist on displaying ultra-gore. (I think it's one reason why I so enjoy watched the DVDs of TV shows from that era as well.)

I think it's absurd it was canceled. It wasn't too violent. The show was still strongly popular and should have lasted even more seasons. I don't think it's right.

The higher ups never watched the show. They wanted to appease the critics. At least we have four seasons. That's one more than Star Trek TOS.
