I think my biggest phobia is fear of falling. It's not quite acrophobia. I can be in high places as long as i don't imagine myself falling off the bridge or out the window! Flying doesn't bother me, nor crossing bridges.
I'm not positive, but I suspect my fear came from a time when I was about 12 or 13. We lived in a big old farmhouse, with a cistern under the back porch. One day I went out the back door and some rotten wood gave way. I sank down, one leg going through the porch. I can still remember the feel of clenching my toes to keep my favorite moccasins on! I yelled and Mom came to help me out. I don't remember being terribly scared at the time, but I think it left a mark on me.
I also dislike spiders and snakes, but not to the point where they make me scream or faint. I had an aunt who would go ghostly white if anyone suggested a snake might be in the vicinity.
I have at least one more, but I'll save that until later.
What are your phobias?

I'm not fond of bugs of any type - but what really makes me cringe are needles. I can never watch an injection being given - whether to me or someone else.
I KNOW exactly how the phobia started, but still can't shake it. When I was about 3, I developed a high fever and was brought to the emergency room. The nurse who gave me a shot of penicillan broke the needle off in my butt and DUG for it with her fingernails. I'll never forget the pain and burning sensation.
I've been needle phobic ever since - and it doesn't help that I have teeney tiny veins that roll away at the slightest touch. Whenever I need a blood test, I look like a pincushion. My doctors always said he could get blood out of a stone - but not out of me!

I would have a hard time identifying my strongest phobia nowadays. When I was a kid, it was spiders. I often had nightmares about them. Maybe it's bees now because I got stung 4 times last year (after many years of peaceful coexistence with the buzzing kindred). I'm not afraid of heights. Not afraid of lightning and thunder, although very loud noises can be distressing. Dislike crowds but I don't know if it amounts to a phobia.

Right now I think I'll add Hurricane Sandy to my list of phobias! Sounds like it's going to be a real terror.
Not right in a flood zone, but packing a "go" kit anyway!
As long as the roof holds and there's not TOO much water in the basement (there WILL be some), I'll count myself lucky. Oh - and hopefully the power won't be out long enough for the food in my packed freezer to spoil.

Take care, Diva, and be safe!

Diva, are your powerlines aboveground or buried? If they're buried, there's a good chance you'll be okay. Last year Irene made hash out of the local power grid, which is all on poles out here in the boonies. And that's what we're looking forward to again... Just don't open that freezer!

It's sort of a combo with the power lines. Mostly above ground though. I'll be surprised if it DOESN'T go out. Life without my pc and microwave will be h-e-l-l !!! Good luck to you, too - and to anyone in the path of Sandy! Now off to tape up the windows!

First of all I hope everyone who's in the path of this new storm - this big one stays safe and sound.
Secondly back to the thread in a word - spiders - I can't even get near the tiniest ones. And how my best friend laughs at me for it. Its a visceral thing - and it partly comes from the fact that my older brother collected bugs - in cigar boxes - and kept them in his room and I think tried to use them to keep the three of us girls out of there. It worked with me, just fine.
Only ones that don't automatically freak me are actually tarantulas, maybe I've managed to learn they are fairly harmless, if furry beings.
But big spiders, little spiders, medium spiders... well, its not my fault you know - they've got too many legs! LOL
oh and preying mantis' --- [whatever the plural of that is] - have always given me the creeps too.

I read in this morning's paper that Nicole Kidman has a phobia about butterflies. Butterflies!!??
Praying mantis, I have to agree, are somewhat creepy. And then there are "walking sticks."
My other phobia is about holes in the wall. I have no clue where it originated (although I do remember being worried about monsters under the bed!). In the apartment I moved from, there was an opening in the ceiling in the hall that allowed entrance into the crawlspace above. Occasionally during windy storms, for some reason it would "pop" and the cover would shift to one side--which meant I had to close it. You wouldn't believe the courage it took for me to even take a broom handle to shift that cover back to the opening! (This house has an opening for the crawlspace, but so far it has not dislodged.)
In another house where I lived some years ago, there was a storage area under the stairs. The door opening was smaller than usual, and I had an awful time putting things in there or getting them out. Something in my subconscious wants me to believe "something" is behind those small doors and covers.
