Hi all. I was just watching TNOT Running death again last night which by the way is one of my favorite episodes ;D and it got me thinking about Jim and Artie's childhood cause Jim says he learned everything he knows about playing poker well sitting on his dads lap;D so I always assumed they both had a very good childhood but I wanted to know what every one else thought Ps. sorry if a thread like this has been posted before also sorry for posting it. this the first thread I ever started on a forum sight so I'm a bit nervous :)hehe

No, I don't think anyone has ever started such a thread, and it's a good idea.
We know extremely little about their childhoods. In Terror Stalked the Town Jim says he broke his arm sledding so we have to assume he lived somewhere that it snowed. I think the remark about his daddy's knee was just a joke. But who knows?
I can't think of anything Artie says except his references to Great Aunt Maude and we have no idea whether she really existed.
Mostly it's left up to our imaginations, and I've played it out, for Jim so far, in my stories. Others have different ideas.

Artie mentions a porch glider incident, but that might be as real as his Great Aunt Maude. He also mentions his showboating days (though he likely wasn't still a child then).

Thanks for starting it. And I also have the feeling that Jim is joking about the way he learned to play poker. Maybe bc as I recall RC says that line with a trademark tiny smile... as if to say jkjk... you know?
There are a lot of different background stories for the agents in fanfiction, precisely because the show itself didn't go into backstory much for him and even less for Artie, unless of course GAM was a real person.
So there's lots of leeway here. I know I chose to believe that Jim did attend West Point, but that only goes for my fanfics, it doesn't rule what other writers decide, and it shouldn't. I've also toyed with the idea that Artie's parents were separated when he was very young, through the death of his mother, or because of the bad character of his father, perhaps, it adds, for me, a source for the melancholy Artie sometimes shows. My own take on Artie just doesn't fit in with a classic happy family while he was growing up. OTOH in my backstory for Jim his momma dies when he's only six years old, so maybe Im just an angst-monger LOL --- for me, that gives Jim the impetus he shows as an adult to save people ... bc he couldn't save her. But all these are again my ideas, and don't, and shouldn't rule anyone else's stories, imo

Well, if you read my stories you know I've created a bit of angst for Jim too. I feel it's necessary to explain his stoic, often somber behavior. I have ideas in mind for Artie and I think I've hinted at them. I hope to write a story sometime soon that includes more of his background. Sometimes it's great to have a lot of information about TV characters to base your story on. When I wrote for the Lost World, I had that. But with WWW, we basically have little canon to refer to. I try to stick to what we know but I have lots and lots of leeway as well. Which is also nice as it allows my imagination to run wild. (I guess that's a good thing! ) I would say that the main thing we know about Artie is that he was an actor. We know both of them were in the Union Army during the Civil War and attained the rank of captain. Jim was in the cavalry--though I think his claim in Inferno that he had 10 years in the cavalry was a slight exaggeration. Artie doesn't care for horseback riding all that much, so I'm assuming infantry for him.

I can't think of anything Artie says except his references to Great Aunt Maude and we have no idea whether she really existed. I started a fanfic last week in which Aunt Maude definitely exists! ;D Below is a "teaser" of what I've done so far (and I do NOT write quickly): - - - - - - - - - “Great jumping balls of St. Elmo’s fire!” Artemus Gordon stood with a stunned expression, clutching the telegraph message he just transcribed. “Artie, what wrong? You’re positively pale.” Numbly, Artie handed over the paper to his partner. Jim read it aloud. “Proceed to Washington to escort Mrs. Maude G. Primrose to Chicago to meet with recently-established ruler of united principalities of Romania, Alexander Cuza. Mrs. Primrose is former teacher and long-time friend and will be crucial in helping cement relations with the recently-assimilated principalities of Moldavia and Walachia. Mrs. Primrose is to be treated with utmost deference and respect.” “So it’s a reunion of two old friends. A simple diplomatic escort mission. Sounds pretty tame to me. Can‘t think there‘d be much trouble with some elderly lady by the name of Primrose.” Seeing Artie’s wince at every mention of the lady’s name, Jim finally asked. “So who’s Maude Primrose anyway?” “Maud G. Primrose. Maude Gordon Primrose.” Artie barely choked out the name. “Gordon? You mean that’s your Great Aunt Maud? She’s real?” “All too real,” sighed Artie. “Don’t get me wrong, Jim. I love her; she basically raised me. But she can be...” he paused to groan, “You’ll see.” - - - - - - - - - - - Still need to work out a lot plot kinks, but GAM will make an appearance! And there's already an definitive (though obscure) hint on exactly who I based her on.

No, no and no. Although I DID meet Helen Hayes once. ;D Nice lady.
Just about getting to the "confrontation with the villain" scene. Still probably a few weeks out to final "polishing up".

Helen Hayes was GREAT in "The Snoop Sisters" I watched most of the movie series last summer with my parents.
We will just have to keep on guessing and find out who your version of Great Aunt Maude really is ;D.

I'm suspecting it's Imogene Coca (but I have an unfair advantage, having spent the weekend with Diva last fall). It's got to be someone who played a character named Primrose.

Yeah, you got it. The Primrose was the giveaway. Only a theatre maven or someone who knows me would have guessed. I just hope I do justice to both Immy and Great Aunt Maude.

Up to 8 pages (which is about halfway for me) and searching the internet for a few pictures of Immy I can "doctor" to fit the story. She was one heck of a great lady and I dearly miss her. I've always been especially grateful to her because in visiting her in the nursing home, I saw first hand how the stages of Alzheimers progressed. Years later, I had to see my Mom through that same horrible disease. It helped to know what was coming. An ooooooollllllllddd (1978) pic of John Cullum, me, my mom and Immy. I clearly remember my mom's delighted reaction: "Imogene HUGGED me!"

Unless I'm greatly mistaken, that imaginative bio was by Rielle under a different name.

Glad you like it. oh and btw, I wouldn't have minded being on the receiving end of a hug from John Cullum, myself

Gee - someone else who knows who John Cullum is! (Snish likes him as well.) If you ever find yourself in New York at a time when John is performing on stage, I can promise a personal intro. (Snish too!) John's getting up there (he was 82 in March), but he has no plans to retire - ever!
