Man I keep forgetting to check this thread. Love the shot of the cats claiming their new sofa ;D! And the shots of the birds in the tree tops are really nice. Are you noticing an increase in the bird population in your area with all the fires going on in the distance? I often wonder if birds and other wildlife return to their prior territories when everything is scorched or if they simply move on to claim other territory. I know a lot of ground animals lose their lives but it seems like the birds would get out ok except for the nestlings. Those fires are just so sad on every level. Hope all you folks near them are faring alright. I haven't noticed an increase in the bird population this year due to the fire, perhaps because the big fire was further away from me, about 25 miles. When we had the two last summer that were both within about 10 miles of me, I thought I did notice more. Perhaps some of those birds have stayed around, enjoying the buffet I put out rather than have to scrounge in the forest, because I get a LOT of birds.

Funny, isn't it? Cats have the reputation of seeking soft, silken pillows to sleep on. But they also like hard smooth surfaces. My Brandy is currently sleeping on the hardwood floor of the dining room, when the sofa is nearby and the bed not far off.
Cute kitty, Paradox.

I call these the dog cat days of August September. Awww Neo is such a little cutie. That's what Duke does he could and usually does have his pick of all the soft places to sleep but when Kenneth is gone he sometimes sleeps on the dining room table (until I catch him!) I guess he wants to be close to the door so he will know when Kenneth puts the key in the lock lol

Actually Neo is a boy. But my husband, who is the cat person here, also absent mindedly refers to him as "she" or "her". I guess because he's "pretty". He is named after Neo in the "Matrix". You should see him tear up the side of a tree trunk and then leep to another tree trunk on the other side of the creek. (it's a small creek) I think he learned that from squirrels when he lived in the wild. LOL!

The vast majority of solid yellow cats are male, just as 3-colored cats are female. My Brandy is one of the rare exceptions. When I entered the SPCA and saw her for the first tme, I referred to her as "he" and was corrected. If there's white on a ginger-cat, they can be either gender.

I never knew that. Did you know that a majority of blue eyed white cats (not sure of the gender question) are deaf? We had a one and didn't know but my mom was taking classes with a veterninarian at PSU and he told her that. Made a lot of sense, and we were relieved!

I didn't know that about ginger cats either. Genetics elude me most of the time. Thank's Gal Cal! When I was young I had a calico who mated with a pure white tom with green eyes. She had three pure white kittens. One female with blue eyes who was deaf. One male with blue eyes who could hear just fine and one male with one green eye and one blue, also with good hearing. I named them "Angela", "Aries" and...get this..."Artemus". LOL!

I have heard that about blue-eyed white cats. I don't think it matters which gender. My sisrter had a blue-eyed white cat who was NOT deaf but was a real character. Jan had a knit afghan that Lightnin' (the cat's name) liked to sleep on. but if the afghan wasn't where he wanted to sleep, he would pick it up in his mouth and drag it across the floor, between his legs, to wherever he wanted! (She had a black cat at the same time named Thunder.) Lightnin' would also "attack" the mailman. When he heard the mail being slipped through the door slot, he'd race to the door and try to get it. Guy had to be sure not to stick his fingers through!

It is interesting about blue eyed white cats being deaf. We learned this at a cat show, if a blue eyed white cat isn't deaf, it will have a bit of color on its head. If it has color near each ear, it won't be deaf, if it has color by one ear, it will be able to hear in that ear and be deaf in the ear. Odd eyed cats will be deaf in the ear on the same side as the blue eye, unless there is a bit of color. It will be able to hear fine with the other ear.
Then like all cats, gold eyed whites have selective hearing. They only hear when they want to hear.

I think almost all cats suffer from selective hearing. Princess only knows her name when it's treat time! My one collie has selective hearing as well. I think it is universal, especially with males of all species. Anything relating to food is always heard. Even if you are just thinking about opening the fridge.

Oh, what a delightful thread. I'm not much into taking pictures these days, but now I'm simply going to have to get some good ones of my two furr-friends. In the meantime, here's my favorite of Gerri.
My brother had a pair (brother and sister) of pure white Devon Rex kitties given to him. The brother, Kew (a.k.a. Doofus) had gold eyes, but his sister Keelee (a.k.a. Smug or Pasha Shaboom - P.D.Q. Bach, anyone?) had blue eyes and she was one of those very rare ones with no hearing problems. I'll have to dig up some of the pictures of her on top of the stove when the oven was on. She was a total heat s*** (rude but appropriate word).
Wait a minute, where's the browse to post pics box gone? Hmm.

It's how I posted that picture on Pidge's birthday thread. There was a strip between 'Subject' and 'Message Icon' for making an attachment, and it let me attach a picture from my files without needing to link.

It appears that feature has been disabled. Might have to speak to one of the co-generals about it. ;D

I saw that option on the BBBS board too when the first threads were posted. And if you clicked on the picture it would enlarge. The attachment option looks like a direct link to your computer files. (maybe thats not a good thing)
