What would you have like to have seen???

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but if WWW had gone into five or hopefully more seasons what would you have liked to have seen or where would you have liked James and Artie to have visited?

My ideas: I would like to have seen one or more episodes set entirely on The Wanderer. I always love the scenes of the inside of the train and wish we could have seen more of it.

I would also like to have seen some episodes or flashbacks that looked into James and Artie's early years with the Secret Service or even their military experiences.

Maybe some episodes in different locations. I was driving through the historic district and the riverfront of Hannibal, MO, where I live and I thought wouldn't it have been interesting to have had an episode set in post Civil War Hannibal. I have to do a fan fiction where the boys have an assignment here, but of course that will have to wait until I finish the others that I am working on, writer's block has unfortunately settled in I am afraid so it maybe awhile before any or all of them are completed.

Those are the ideas I can come up with at the moment. What are some ideas others have?

I've always wished there was a snow episode. They're always in the dry, dusty southwest, or occasionally in other parts of Southern Cal. standing in for Washington or the southeast, but never in a place with snow. A perilous mountain pass, a Plains blizzard, anything! And I wouldn't settle for fake snow, either.

I don't think we've discussed this for a while, and it may be it was over on Kristin's forum.

I like this kind of discussion a lot myself because to me 'what ifs' make for the best kind of stories.

From a RL standpoint, I would have liked to see some different guest stars come onto the show. Its likely the ones I'm thinking of were busy elsewhere, but not through the entire four years of our favourite programme. So I would have invited Barbara Stanwyck to play one of her signature tough ladies... Raymond Burr, as a judge, maybe... Peter Falk, after all a friend of Ross' I believe and perhaps Natalie Wood? I would have brought some 'Westerners' [Western actors] over after they finished or before they started other shows James Drury, John McIntire, John Smith, Doug McClure... you see where I'm going with that one.

I would have invited Suzanne Pleshette back for sure, whether as Lydia or not.
I would have brought back Dr. Faustina, Professor Arcularis [Howling Light], and the bad guy's lady friend from Bubbling Death...love Madlyn Rhue!

Other than that I would definitely have gone for more eps that dealt with the war Jim and Artie fought in. It shaped their generation and the two decades following the War at the very least. And if they wouldn't bring back Manzeppi, or couldn't because VB had other commitments, I would have found another magician character for a couple of similarly over the top eps.

Other than that, I would have tried to run some just-Artie eps if that was feasible. I think it probably was depending on the story. Just to balance out the Artie-less shows, you know. And no, I don't think that disqualifies me as a Gem. To work with Artie I would definitely have brought back Jeremy and or Frank. But I would have pushed for a strong, brave female agent... LOL they wouldn't have done it, of course not then.

Last, [sorry you asked, yet? ] I would have done all possible to have at least one more Loveless episode... cause who doesn't love 'the good doctor'?

I agree: more Loveless, the return of a few villains that hadn't been killed off, and some of the ladies too.

Most of all, I would have liked to have seen more development of the boys' backgrounds, how they met, their experience in the war. We can imagine these scenarios in our stories but to know what actually happened (in the minds of the scriptwriters) would have been great.

Also more weather. Snow of course. I'm sure the Secret Service (and crime) did not shut down simply because of winter (even if the Union and Confederate armies did).

And episodes where Jim and Artie spent a lot of time together, working to solve the case, talking about it, as well as in action. I always enjoy their interaction.

Jim shirtless wouldn't hurt either.

I would loved to have seen more of Manzeppi, though I can live without the "good doctor" just fine.

Now the Mexican lady colonel would have been super working with our boys to protect Juarez or solve a riddle...anything. She was great.

Having Jim and Artie team up with Jeremy or Frank would have been fun, as well.

But most importantly lots of fights, lots of action and lots of Jim shirtless!

More involvement, action, episodes with Jeremy Pike teaming up with Jim and Artie.

How about more President Grant involvement in an assignment, that he was swooped away caught up in the action, he had no control over!! Jim and Artie hanging out with ol President Grant getting into the action .

I’d like to see them have to go on an Australia adventure, undercover similar to that movie Quigley Down Under.
Or an Antarctic adventure that would have been cool. No pun intended or maybe I did intend it.

Yes! More Loveless! But as a more desperate, hateful Loveless since he’s losing patience and always having to run away, this time he has the upper hand. Which brings me to the idea of more 2 or 3 part episodes.

More skilled fights, gun fights/shoot outs, action, stunts, new gadgets, horse chases and more interesting undercover assignments for both Jim, Artie, and Jeremy possibly with more Colonel Richmond being involved. And of course, having them work together most of the time is preferable but not always.

Return of Valtraine, I don’t think he died at the end of Limbo. Return of Stark, Avery, Arcularis, and to have some totally new very powerful, diabolical baddies equal or superior to both Jim and Artie .

More Wanderer episodes, it would be very cool if Jim did more stunts on the train, like on top, outside fighting while the train was moving. Hence, the more action scenes.

More explosions, explosions and did I say explosions! ;D

How about aerial perspectives for example more use of hot air balloons or Artie accidentally makes the first “modern” glider in a MacGyver moment, in order to get away from a baddie.

More real western style type episodes would be nice also, with more horse action and horses. It would be nice to see them at the Grand Canyon on a man hunt. River rafting anyone?! Cliff climbing?!!Which would mean the producers of the Wild Wild West would have needed a budget for all these out in the field type scenes.

How about tying in more historical events with Jim and Artie, like the Lone Pine 1872 Earthquake since it is contemporary with Jim and Artie, something like that with natural events, human events or maybe some astrological event.

What would it be like from a story point of view if Jim or Artie was on the Titanic? Or a train accident 1878 – Tariffville, Connecticut, or a steamboat accident e.g. Cairo, IL Storm and Steamboat Sinkings, Nov 1857?

Just some ideas that would be interesting to mix in as a Wild Wild West episode. Jim, Artie, Jeremy getting pushed into historical events.

Maybe a love interest with Jim and a lady but it turns tragic, a romance tragedy. The lady would be forced on the baddies side, she’s good but forced to do the baddies plan or diabolical deeds. Same goes for a Artie romance story . Either or.

More supernatural episodes like Limbo, dealing with different dimensions and dealing with the power of the mind.

Shirt or no shirt, doesn't matter.

Plots/stories like that would have been something I would have liked to see for season 5 and beyond.

Is that blasphemy? ;D I mean, you could have a marvelous crack-up, better than any ordinary explosion. It would have been waaaay over budget for any TV series of the time though. And of course one of Our Heroes believes the other one's been killed in the wreck, etc. etc. Has anyone else thought about that?

I, and I think others, have thought about a train wreck in a fan fiction. Don't know if I have the expertise to write such a thing. In a modern TV show such an event would have caused other problems because the stories are connected from one event to another. In WWW they would pretend it never happened by the next episode!

I thought wrecking the Wanderer would be a great idea for a 2 parter episode, I'm sure you have the expertise to write something like that California gal. Good suggestion about fan fictions, I'll go look, see if anyone has written about the Wanderer in a wreck, I just started reading a few fan based stories on FFN. You just reminded me I must continue my reading assignments. A lot of good reading over there and it looks like there's a reading fan fiction section here too. Fantastic! ;D

Maybe I'll try for a fan fiction story about the Wanderer ending up being in a wreck, sabotaged by one of our favorite villains. Wha ha ha ha ha ha!! ;D

Forever now I wish they would have had a snow episode. That would have been the best!! They were mostly working in good weather sunny days. Did have some bad rainy stormy days like Thousand Eyes, Tottering Tontine and Bleak Island, but never got stuck in the snow.

Definitely a few more episodes with Dr. Loveless--- Artie wasn't even in the last one with him. Of course they had to have another encounter!

I could see a couple of the past villains making a return, would have been nice, but besides Loveless and Manzeppi twice, there were no returning characters. Miss Piecemeal twice too, but she wasn't the main character that caused all the trouble.

President Grant was in all 4 seasons so definitely more drop-by's from him.

Have you ever noticed Jim didn't kiss as many girls in Season 4 as he did in 1, 2 and 3? I wondered what happened with that. He didn't get a girl in every episode anymore....

And finally, yes more fights and fights and explosions and newer gadgets that we hadn't seen before Maybe while stuck in Washington for 9 episodes Artie had time to cook up a lot more cool things to get out of trouble and catch the bad guys. ;D

A fun topic. Thanks for the suggestion although sounds like it was done before but for any of us new to the board it's fun to think about.

I agree with much that already been said ( except the snow. I saw WAY too much of the real stuff this winter). I would have liked: episodes that dealt with their war experiences, fights and explosions of course, maybe a few episodes that had real romances for the fellows, Count Manzeppi- LOVE him, and a train wreck for sure. There is a very well written Fan fic featuring a train wreck. I don't think it's on FFN though. It's an older story maybe on a forum. Very well done I remember.

One thing I don't think was mentioned already was a spy type episode in DC itself. Lots of dignitaries, President Grant and some spy vs spy stuff. Lots of gadgets and well dressed baddies.

Of course all this discussion makes me a bit sad since we won't see it, but some great ideas for FF.

Oh hello everybody, this is my first post on my first forum. Thought I would contribute instead of lurking for once. These are my thoughts and opinions, and that's the way it is. As I tell people in real life, you don' t like what I say tough! I'm not here to please I'm here to share what I think, feel, and opinionate. That's what forums are for right? To share ideas. I don't care for Manzeppi, he was too flim flam super fake magic sorry but I couldn't stand those episodes his whole demeanor just screamed arrogance and over confidence when he really didn't deserve it. Not sure why James played around with him so much or that would be the writers fault.

Most of the ladies weren't worth coming back again except maybe Lydia and the Mexican secret service equivalent. Oh! I wanted to see more Antoinette with Loveless not those bubble heads.

I would have liked to see more of the bad girls getting what they deserved not just being let go if you look some should have been charged with attempted murder!!! Yeah they bat their eyes and pucker their lips they get away because James or Artemus says so?!! I don't think so!! Some should have been thumb screwed then left to hang by their thumbs!! That's what I think.

I think more steam punk inventions should have been in order and more real western to off set it. If you noticed Artemus didn't really have much in different gadgets or inventions later in the series. It was the same'o same'o lame get away smoke bombs I would have liked to see something different I'm sure the writers could have thought up something?!!!! More diversity in gizmo's when James used them. This is after all made after the James Bond 007 idea, so take a look at the James Bond movies look at how the writers used their imagination with something new and diverse. I have to ask the writers, what happen?

More out in the country travel with horses with James and Artemus together camping out together and not with some make up beard Artemus would wear in the hot sun, that was very lame it wouldn't have worked. So more episodes that made more reality sense.

More or better fighting, I got tired of the body slam James was using most of the time during the 4th season and I realize the restrictions it would have been better to see the real stuff with practical applications.

More weapon use such as swords, long sticks, knives, or using anything as a weapon, such as ablibbing weapon like using anything in a creative effective way, as James would say "improvise" that would have been nice.

More at sea on a ship activity and story.

More Wanderer train activities and stories.

More high country stories.

How about a Great Lakes on a ship episode, hitting a storm disaster.

A Southern California, LA San Diego area episode.

How about a 1880's Area 51 episode ;D

What I'd like to see is a cross over with the Wild Wild West and the Warehouse 13 idea dealing with artifacts with supernatural attributes. The Philosopher's Stone in one Manzeppi episode has the idea I'm thinking about.


Was there an episode dealing with environmental factors? I think the closest was Green Terror. And the headless woman.

More diversity with Artemus acting in disguise if you notice he has a default mannerism, body language and he messes up his accents, his strongest was Italian and Russian anything else is a conglomerate mish mash of the two. So I would say better acting, more research in Artemus's department. His anything Asian was highly cringable.
Oh an no more drag Artemus, please!! Artemus should stay what he was really good with. And if he wasn't good he needed to practice practice practice.

But what I would like to see and what was available for the time period, taking in consideration how much time they were allotted on each episode and money concerns all that plays on the environmental aspects.

I think all the people involved after Bob Conrad's accident during the end of the third season, they all knew on a subconscious level it was over with, also when you include the network restrictions I feel the fourth season was just going through the motions, unfortunately. Then with Ross's declining health acting takes a lot out of you even when you are healthy.

It's nice to dream, wish all you want but unless someone comes in with the big bucks, and great look a likes of our two heroes, we will be stuck with fan fiction stories as some have suggested.

It's knowing which fan fiction stories that are worth reading that's difficult.

Everyone so far has great suggestions similar to me except on a few minor issues.

Back in James and Artemus times the feds their main jurisdiction involved border control, counter fitting, and protecting the pres. Today the feds have expanded their control so that opens up using present day plots for 1870's stories which I noticed they used distopia ideas of the future to fit in the 1870's and the two movies which is fine, after all the Wild Wild West is science fiction/western I think there should have been more. But without the green Hulk. That was way too corny, stupid, or how about asinine.

I'd like to have seen a more in-depth time travel than what we saw in Limbo.

More James detailed interaction with the indigenous populations showing the Indians in a much better light than what they were portrayed in the Wild Wild West. That had more potential for improvement.

Overall the Wild Wild West did have a diverse selection in plots and stories I just think it would have been nice to have more of it all. ;D

Those are my top off the head suggestions, ideas and thoughts for what they're worth.

I have a lot more suggestions but I don't want to give all my fan fiction ideas away. Since that is what we're left with now as mentioned prior. ;D

Oh one more thing that I could have gone without, I think less mushy mushy between James and Artemus's interaction would have been more realistic and appreciated on my part to a point, to me the Wild Wild West seemed a bit on the gay side which I felt watching this when it first aired on a subconscious level, but I couldn't put it into words like this gentleman did in his article.

As far as I'm concerned, people are free to see WWW any way they want. It could be comforting for a gay boy to see role models on TV.

I think it's a very slanted view of the show though, that overlooks numerous elements of the series--for instance, it was Artie who had a real love interest, and Jim rarely seduces a woman. To me, claiming Jim wore tight pants to impress men is sexist, as though women's interests count for nothing.

I did enjoy the paragraph about Loveless though.

I wanted to share this article about another interesting point of view this gentleman had, I don’t agree on everything but over all I do, and what’s so negative about forever Jim and Artie?! I love Jim and Artie, Ross and Bob, and I have my own opinions which I don't see as being negative just maybe critical. What was so wrong about my personal opinions, just because I have a unique point of view, I’ve had experience in the performing arts for a very long time and I can say that I deserve an opinion and those were my opinions about Artie and Ross Martin, nothing hateful or negative about that my friend.

Would you consider removing it and putting it elsewhere, perhaps in a thread of its own? For the board's sake. I seem to recall we had another thread somewhere about gays and slash, but ever since the board got so messed up with all the sub-boards, I can't find anything.

The topic was asking for what you wanted to see, my point I was trying to make and I failed miserably was this gentleman’s article. I agree on most of his points and my point was I wanted to see less of what this guy was talking about if there was any future seasons. Maybe I didn’t make myself clear enough when I said I could do without the mushy mushy stuff, which this guy interpreted as a gay attraction. I saw what he saw when I recently read his article it blew me away! I didn’t see anything really negative, just to me ironic, eye opening and what he saw I interpreted all these years as something else (or on a subconscious level his interpretation, I don't know) until I read his point of view, whatever, each to his or her own. Guess I won't really know unless I really sit down to evaluate it which I'm not going to do. Oh wow! Please write some of these stories, pleeese! I think that most of them sound absolutely brilliant and I can't wait to read them.

As for what I would have liked to have seen in Wild Wild West, a few more strong female characters who can hold their own, yes because of the times they need the male characters' assistance but they're not these weak and feeble women who need the man to come riding in on a proverbial white horse!

So, that's about it from me, useless pontificating I know. As for all the ideas here - anyone fancy writing some good fanfiction with some of those ideas.

Hi, Alicia, I'm Rielle and I thought I would try to clarify a couple of points here.

'slash' is a fannish term for fanfiction that features a same sex couple. It started in Star Trek fandom about a million years ago and has since shown up in every fandom that has any fanfiction. The problem with slash and to some people with the article you shared from salon.com is that the authors all insist on seeing same-gender relationships between characters where none were envisioned by the show creators, producers or writers of these shows and movies.

The author of this article is really stretching a point imo, to 'prove' his or her theory about our two agents. And to some readers stressing that point is going to be offensive. And to a lot of W3 fans I know and have known its just unacceptable to even suggest. That would be the reason for the reactions you've seen here.

To my mind, the 'problem' with these theories and fanfics is that the authors usually don't know anything about real life gay men and lesbians. Being lesbian myself I can attest to that last point, these stories are little more, for the most part than same-sex 'bodice rippers'... with no plot, no characterization and only one 'idea' ie. having the characters act on the author's theory.

As far as the friendship the series did in fact show between Jim and Artie that's part of a much older tradition in movies,shows and fanfiction... to a great extent W3 was a 'buddy show', as was MUNCLE, Starsky and Hutch, Star Trek original, and more cop shows and westerns than I could begin to list here. Usually its two guys working together who if they aren't to begin with become friends as their work goes on. In the 60s and 70s nothing beyond that would have cleared the censors, anyway.

Cagney and Lacey was one example of two women partners and yes, there were and are fans who think they went in the direction of slash. But the producers, writers and actresses will all tell you different, and they were the creative force behind that show.

So while I know that some viewers see this kind of relationship between our agents, I have to say I don't see anything more than the tight friendship of two people who are working closely together in sometimes deadly dangerous situations. They begin to treat each other and talk about each other as brothers because they've 'had each other's backs' so often. For myself I don't see that as mushy. But everyone has their own opinion. For myself I see that as a positive view of men or women who become quite good friends without anything 'extra' attached.

Well said, Rielle. I could have added to my last post that as far as I'm concerned the best part about The Wild Wild West is the warm, brotherly relationship between the two guys. They trust each other to the utmost, which has been shown in numerous episodes, as well as fan fiction. Without that friendship and trust, neither could have survived as long as they have.

It just boggles my mind that so many people out there don't recognize it simply as brotherly love, and that such friendships are possible, existed, and do exist.

I agree with you Rielle, the slash I have read seems to be predominantly based on the 'sex' aspect of it and nothing else. I've never understood why some writers seem to insist that they were also lovers, I never saw any of that watching it, just saw two men who were extraordinarily close friends and allies.

All you need to do is open your original post again, take out all the stuff about the article and close the post. Then go somewhere else on the board, open a new thread, and post it. This forum is probably as good as any if you really feel it needs to be posted. And I suspect many are a clueless as I am what all the sub-boards mean and why they were needed.

Moving the piece only indicates your sensitivity to the health of the board and its community, and that you want to be a contributing, friendly part of it all. Who knows, a lively, respectful conversation may arise from it, and above all it won't detract from the original, fun purpose of this thread, which was to express wishful thinking regarding the series if it had been extended, not the relationship between the two agents. You could have easily simply said you would have preferred a more antagonistic relationship. Likely no one would agree with you, but you could say it. That's your right.

Hi rielle, Oh thank you very much rielle for your informative post that really helped explain a lot helping me think about the article what the guy had to say I did get somewhat confused. I looked a little about slash but your explanation was more meaningful and I have to agree with you now that I understand better.
That’s what forums are for to have adult conversations and I’m glad I got some people here that helped me with that point of view and interpretation.
Where I work I am around straight men, and gay men/women and we protect each other everyday, life and death situations but we don’t exhibit in public the close friendship feelings and relationships we have to be constantly professional and it’s what I’m used to so seeing that on the Wild Wild West doesn’t always happen in real life situations. The Wild Wild West is fiction anyways. I have been trained to act professional. Even on our off duty times we have to watch our friendliness so it’s not miss interpreted as more. When I reacquainted myself watching DVDs of the Wild Wild West just about a few months ago due to being laid up by injury I had noticed that aspect about the show its been decades since I watched the Wild Wild West.
I’ll leave my post the way it is, I don’t have time to search where to re-post it and I don’t want to post it anywhere else or post it on it's own, I got a great answer from rielle and a good discussion but I will thank you for telling me the technical steps California gal. And I still think it's a valid topic to discuss in an adult manner what I want to see more and what I would like to see less. I have that right to express my opinions and to bring forth other points of views and interpretations hoping to gain understanding which I thank rielle for explaining the slash concept. As I said before I didn’t see it as negative and I didn’t take offense by this gentleman’s view, I thought it was interesting which got me to think about his ideas whether they were true or not. At first, it seemed his point of view was somewhat true, but as rielle pointed out explaining things to me besides having my co-workers point of view, I have been given more information to think about so I can come to my own conclusions.
My intentions were not of negativity or disrespect so the link stays I already deleted the text part of the article in my post. I can’t control how others behave or react to what I say or opinionate when my intentions are for educational purposes. People have to have self control that is not my responsibility.
Dieter I do have the right to not like most of the women on the tv show, I do like more than just 2, I just don’t remember all their names, so forgive me if I’m not as into the Wild Wild West as you are, I do have a busy life and I don’t have time to watch tv, only when I’m injured. I also have the right not to like Menzeppi, I just didn’t like how the writers or creators made him, that’s my opinion. I think seeing more stronger women, and women who stand up to their responsibility by having some type of honor, yeah they got caught, now pay the piper instead of getting off scott free, that’s one aspect I didn’t like about how the writers wrote most of the women on the Wild Wild West and also made them ditsy. I found the show very sexist, and I could do without Artie saying “Never trust a woman”. I don’t need to hear that, now that was garbage. And if you don’t like it, well Dieter that’s just too tough for you, I’m glad I don’t agree with everyone here and we have different opinions. That’s what makes things interesting as long as we keep it nice and not name call.
