I am probably the only member on this forum who became a fan of the series through the DVDs. In March of 2007. when I was in the middle of watching the first season, I found this trade paperback in a box in our library's book sale room entitled "Who's Who In TV" by Richard H. Heller. Basically a preview of the 1967-68 TV Season, the front cover has "Flying Nun", "I Spy", "The Monkees" (RIP Davy Jones), "Big Valley", "He and She" (a Paula Prentiss sitcom that lasted a season) and "The Dean Martin Show". Can you believe it?? Victoria Barkley made the cover but not Jim or Artie!!
Anyway, this little paperback has mini-biographical profiles of the cast members of every new and returning show represented that season, and "Our Favorite Programme" is featured on page 73 of the book, right next to "Gunsmoke", a program that shared its sets with ours, and has a photo of Ken Curtis without his beard looking more like Jack Webb!!
Anyway, here is what the lives of Bob and Ross were during the time of the "Summer of Love":
"ROBERT CONRAD was born on March 1, 1935, in Chicago. His real name, Conrad Robert Falk. He studied drama at Northwestern University, but started in show business as a night club singer. Bob got his Hollywood start appearing in TV in "Lawman", "Maverick", "Colt 45". "77 Sunset Strip", "Kraft Theatre" and "Temple Houston." He became a star as Tom Lopaka in "Hawaiian Eye." His regular TV role led to movies like "Palm Springs Weekend", "Hotel Madrid" and "Young Dillenger". Recently, he began singing in night clubs again, with great success. He's interested in flamenco and Spanish ballet. He speaks fluent Spanish, and, during several visits to Mexico City, has emerged as a recording personality. He is 5 feet. 10 inches tall, weighs 160 pounds, has brown hair and green eyes. Bob is married and is the proud father of three children."
"ROSS MARTIN, Artemus on the CBS show, has been called an "Alec Guiness in chaps" because of his brilliant diversity in playing every type of part. He was born in Grodek, Poland, just a few days before his parents moved to the USA. Raised in New York's Polyglot East side, he spoke only yiddish before learning English at 5. Since, he has mastered French, Spanish, and German. Before acting, Ross, following his masters at CCNY, taught, then got a law degree. Radio acting lured him from jobs a as a department-store buyer and publicity man. He played three regular roles on the "Janice Gray" radio serial. This was followed by Broadways "Hazel Flagg" and "Shinbone Alley." First movie was "Conquest of Space" in 1954. He was co-star of TV's "Mr. Lucky." Ross is now engaged but his first marriage made him the father of a 21-year old daughter."
Another intersting WWW-related sidenote: On page 101 of this book, at the start of the section about "ABC movies", the first one discussed is "Ship of Fools" and they chose a shot with Michael Dunn sitting on a chair, smiling, and acting like a thespian. So, even though he never got his profile in the book, Dr. Loveless creeped in here anyhow! You may have known some of these facts about Bob and Ross already, but I thought you would be interested in reading and finding out about this book.
