It's all a matter of perception, and also how one wants to perceive. I'm sure we are all perceived differently by others than we see ourselves, and we each see others in different ways as well.
If you really want to see someone (or even a situation) in a certain way, that's how you are going to see it, no matter what the facts imply. We can always adjust the "facts" to suit ourselves! ;D
It's just human nature.

The picture of Jim and Arte from season one, Casual Killer, always reminds me of two little boys posing for pictures

There's a picture of my brother at about age 10 or so, with one of his pals, and the pose is almost the same. ;D

But Paradox Eyes, we wouldn't get any sense out of you. You'd be sitting in a chair staring at them. Actually, having said that, so would I....sigh...

This subject has always been a huge problem for me. It seems that a good 3/4 of the internet thinks that if the two male leads (or two male characters, extras, people walking past on the street) give each other even the merest glance that they're together romantically. The worst fandom for this is Sherlock (Holmes). Thre are so many shows/books/movies that I love but don't even bother trying to find fanfiction for because I know that every other fic will be a slash-fic! And I'll stop here because, if I don't, I'll start ranting. Let's just say that I love that this is a slash-free community.

I've really enjoyed this discussion--thank you all.
I wanted to mention that recently I went to a local exhibit of some of Winslow Homer's early drawings for Harper's Magazine, which come from the Civil War and the period of WWW. The drawings are very detailed and accurate, and the one that's relevant here is a drawing of a way station on either a train or stage route, which shows a room full of people, both sexes and all ages, all sleeping on the floor together. There's no suggestion that there's anything improper about this. It makes me think our heroes were lucky even to get one hotel room in a place like the little town in Poisonous Posey. And if they did, of course they would share a bed without a second thought, because who wants to sleep on the floor if a bed is available?
And I'm still mulling over the question of Jim falling in love--of course I think he could, and would, and probably did once and it turned out very badly. Thus he decided not to do it again. Maybe he's just putting it off until his adventuring days are over, because his work is no job for a family man. I can't really imagine that he would think he wants the kind of ornamental, empty-headed bimbo that we see him dating in tag scenes. I think he dates them exactly because he can ride off and leave them without a second thought. It would hurt to leave a woman who challenges and intrigues him.

In my multi-part story that some of you have read, Jim does fall in love, but he's older. He's still in the service, but fighting the director to be sent into the field again (more). She's a smart, beautiful doctor who can hold her own with him. If you haven't read it, just fire off a request and I'll send it to you. Not posted here because of assorted adult content.

If you remember, in my TNOT Shattered Heart, Jim did fall in love, but he did not realize it, and fought against it, until almost too late. Then of course he lost her. I did not want to tie Jim into a relationship for subsequent stories, since I have a running thread through most of them. On the contrary, though, I felt Lily was so right for Artemus that I wrote her into his life. I think of Jim as one of those men who believes he would want a cloying, helpless woman--as seem to be most of their dates--when in reality he would be happiest with an independent, spirited woman who would challenge him almost daily (and perhaps nightly ). A couple of times in the series we are given the impression that Jim has no interest in a long-term relationship, possibly because of his job (and sometimes Artie seems to share that attitude). However, a few of the women he encountered seemed to get closer to him than others. thanks CG, I have read and enjoyed Shattered Heart, and am going to go back and read it over. I think, and have thought for a long while that the series various producers and directors did James West a disservice, no pun intended by trying to start him out as completely unflappable... nothing moved him at all... nothing and no one... Robert clearly worked hard from first season on to show us there was someone human inside that walking icon 'James Bond in the Old West'. And Ross very evidently was a big help in that regard... I recall a quote Robert gave around the time that Ross died: He said 'I loved Ross... loved him... He took the edge off me'... and I think that says a lot about what Ross' portrayal of Artie did for Robert's portrayal of Jim.

Nydiva, What makes you think that I wouldn't be in Jim's? But I was trying to think of behaving like a proper Victorian young lady and the most any of us females could do would be to sit in an easy chair and just stare at them - or stare at them and try to make it look as though we weren't staring at them! But given half a chance I'd be sitting in Jim's lap with my arms linked around his neck!

Well....I wouldn't be that cruel assaulting our boys like that... Preferably after Jim had warmed his hands at the fire, he'd come and sit by me on the couch (not shown in the photograph) and then very surreptitiously, still talking to Artie, he'd gently take my hand with his own. Of course it might be a bit harder for not to display all my emotions but I'd give it a try. ;D

Being somewhat challenged below the waist (I'm disabled and have to use crutches/wheelchair to get around) throwing people around is just a little difficult for me! We won't go into details, but I'm fine once I get horizontal, I just can't stand for long periods. I mean take my crutch/stick/support away and I fall over! Literally. But things could be worse... So while I'd love to have a go at a sparring match, I rather think that I might be outmatched!

In a scene I was just working on for an upcoming fanfic, Jim fakes Artie out and Artie winds up on the floor -- again. So yeah, it's all in fun.

No, I'm afraid I've never slam-dunked anyone just for fun. Not for any other reason either! ;D I have wrestled crocodiles in the creek. Of course the crocs were large sticks and I was Tarzan.

LOL CalGAl! You know the Twig-Crocs and Real Fake ones have a lot in common... They are especially dangerous because they cannot really be killed, and that why they can come back to get you in another film or something! BBBrrr! Gives you the shivers just thinking about it, doesn't it?

Tyche, my dear...You beginning to blame Freud worries me a bit.... You know what is also said about the Father of Psychoanalysis? Hum...that he is has been "the most criticized, and the least read"... As a very young James West was contemplating his coming fourteenth birthday when Baby Ziggy drew his first noisy breathe on the 6th of May 1856, it never ceases to surprised me that people still find it fit to link his name to anything and everything pornographic !!! It is unfair on a very decent man, and his phenomenal body of work! As for the Slash stuff, as this Board is clearly dis-associating itself, as a rule, from that stuff, what are we even discussing it here?

You are welcome, Ace! And as for my reply - to Tyche - I would never dream of criticizing someone for freely giving their opinion; merely pointing that there is a difference between opinion - valid on its own right - and analysis. As there is between discussion and venting conflict, which was certainly not my intention here! Like yourself I have learnt a LOT from the discussions on all topics on this Board - I -like many- tend to learn better and faster - in a supportive, friendly and considerate environment. I have gained valuable insight, many pen-friendships and I owe this Board many a laugh, when I needed it most! I was not attacking your friend.

LOL!!!! ...Hum... All right, you, young whipper-snapper, I let you off the hook this time... Easy on the bar brawls, Sweetie, and on the liquor! Until you get to be my age that is, when the medicinal properties of said liquor become ...indispensable! Chamomile tea before bedtime, anyone? ...was the same with my little Artemus.... (grumble, grumble...) How many times does one need to get them kids over one's knee before they get some sense (shuffle, shuffle)... In my days..
